Chapter 4 - The Blue Folder.

Claire finished packing the children's clothes without mentioning the folder again.
Daniel did not return upstairs.
Rachel watched Claire carefully but waited until they reached the car before asking what had happened.
"Daniel told me there's something in his father's study."
"What?"
"A blue leather folder."
"Did you get it?"
Claire shook her head.
"Veronica came toward the stairs."
Rachel started the engine.
"Do you have any legal right to enter the study?"
"It's in my house."
"Then call Elena before you go back."
Claire did.
Elena listened and asked one question.
"Is the study in the marital residence or in a separate locked area belonging to a business?"
"Marital residence."
"Then photograph what you find, but do not remove original business records that clearly belong to a company unless your attorney advises you to."
Claire glanced at Rachel.
"What if it's personal?"
"If it concerns your marriage, property, children, or a document addressed to you, preserve it."
Elena paused.
"And Claire, if Daniel is secretly warning you about his sister, assume the situation is moving faster than he can control."
At noon, the school principal confirmed Veronica had been removed from the children's authorized pickup list.
Claire also changed the passwords to the parent portal.
Then she moved through the practical tasks of a life suddenly divided into before and after.
She bought Noah socks.
She bought Mia a phone charger.
She picked up toothbrushes and shampoo.
She called the pediatrician and made sure only Claire and Daniel could authorize record releases.
Each ordinary purchase felt surreal.
She had spent years thinking that marriage ended through one enormous betrayal.
Now she realized it could also end through a grocery bag full of replacement necessities.
At three, Daniel texted.
Veronica left for the office.
Claire read the message.
A second one followed.
Twenty minutes.
Rachel looked at the screen.
"Trap?"
"Maybe."
"Still going?"
"Yes."
Rachel grabbed her keys.
They reached the house in eleven minutes.
Daniel opened the door before Claire knocked.
He looked over Rachel's shoulder at the street.
"You shouldn't have brought her."
Rachel folded her arms.
"You keep saying that as if it helps your case."
Daniel looked exhausted.
"We don't have time."
He led them down the hall to the study that had once belonged to his father, Thomas Hale.
After Thomas died, Daniel had moved some files into the room but rarely used it.
Veronica hated the room.
Claire remembered that now.
She used to call it a shrine to old mistakes.
Daniel unlocked the desk.
The center drawer was empty.
His face drained of color.
"It was here."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"When did you last see it?"
"Last week."
"What was inside?"
Daniel closed the drawer.
"Dad's estate notes."
"What kind of notes?"
"Letters."
"To whom?"
He hesitated.
Rachel stepped closer.
"Daniel, pick a side before someone picks it for you."
He looked at Claire.
"Dad didn't trust Veronica."
Claire said nothing.
That much was not shocking.
Thomas had loved both of his children but often argued with Veronica over control of the company.
"Before he died, he changed parts of the estate plan," Daniel said.
"What parts?"
"I don't know everything."
Claire's patience snapped.
"Stop saying that."
Daniel flinched.
"Then tell me something you do know."
He sat behind the desk.
"Dad created a trust for Mia and Noah."
Claire stared at him.
"You told me he left them education accounts."
"He did."
"Is that not what you're talking about?"
Daniel shook his head.
"The education accounts were separate."
Claire felt the room shrink.
"How much is in the trust?"
"I don't know the current value."
Rachel gave a disbelieving laugh.
Daniel looked ashamed.
"Dad kept the details with his estate attorney."
"Who is the attorney?"
"Samuel Greene."
Claire knew the name.
Greene had attended Thomas's funeral but never contacted her afterward.
"Why would a folder about the children's trust be in our house?"
"Because Dad gave it to me three days before he died."
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"He told me not to give it to Veronica."
"And you kept it in a desk she knows exists."
"It was locked."
Rachel muttered, "Apparently not enough."
Claire leaned toward him.
"Why does Veronica care about a trust for the children?"
Daniel looked at the doorway.
"Because it may include voting shares."
Claire's heart kicked.
Hale Manufacturing was controlled through voting shares.
Even a small shift could change board power.
"How many?"
"Dad never told me."
"What did the letter say?"
Daniel's eyes met hers.
"That if Veronica ever endangered the family assets for personal control, the trustee had authority to move certain shares out of her reach."
Claire sat down slowly.
"Who is the trustee?"
"I thought it was Greene."
"Thought?"
"The letter implied there was another person involved."
"Who?"
Daniel shook his head.
"The page with the name was sealed."
Rachel frowned.
"And you never opened it?"
"Dad told me not to unless Greene contacted me."
Claire stared at him.
"Your father gave you a warning about Veronica, and you still let her transfer our savings into her company?"
Daniel stood.
"You don't understand what happened after Dad died."
"Then explain it."
He walked to the window.
"Veronica found debt."
"Company debt?"
"Some."
"What does that mean?"
Daniel's shoulders tightened.
"Dad had guaranteed loans personally."
Claire's stomach twisted.
"Against what?"
"Property."
"Whose?"
Before Daniel could answer, the front door slammed.
All three of them froze.
Veronica's voice carried down the hallway.
"Daniel?"
His face turned white.
Rachel whispered, "Twenty minutes?"
Daniel moved toward the study door.
"She wasn't supposed to be back."
Veronica's heels clicked closer.
Claire scanned the room.
The empty desk.
The shelves.
The old leather chair.
Then she noticed a framed photograph on the bookcase sitting at a slight angle.
Thomas Hale stood in the picture beside Daniel and Claire on their wedding day.
Behind the frame, a strip of blue leather was barely visible.
Claire crossed the room and lifted the photograph.
A thin blue envelope had been wedged behind it.
Not the folder.
Something smaller.
Her name was written on the front in Thomas Hale's handwriting.
CLAIRE.
Veronica reached the doorway just as Claire slid the envelope into her purse.
"What are you doing in here?"
Claire turned.
Veronica's eyes went immediately to the photograph in Claire's hand.
Then to Claire's purse.
She knew.
Claire saw it in her face.
Veronica took one step forward.
"Give me what you found."
Claire's heartbeat hammered.
"I found a photograph."
"Don't lie to me."
Rachel moved between them.
"Back up."
Veronica's calm disappeared.
"That room contains confidential company property."
Claire lifted her chin.
"Then call your lawyer."
Veronica's eyes narrowed.
"You have no idea what you're holding."
Claire touched the zipper of her purse.
"Neither do you."
Veronica smiled then, but there was no confidence in it.
Only fear.
"If you open that envelope," she said, "you will destroy Daniel."
May you like
Claire looked at her husband.
Daniel did not deny it.
