Chapter 7 - October Seventeenth.

Daniel agreed to meet Claire in the parking lot of a coffee shop far from Hale Manufacturing.
He refused Elena's office.
He refused Rachel's house.
He refused anywhere Veronica might expect.
Claire almost refused him in return.
Elena advised her to go only if Rachel waited nearby and Claire kept the conversation in a public place.
Daniel arrived ten minutes late wearing the same jacket he used for work.
He looked as though he had aged a year in two days.
Claire did not hug him.
He did not try.
They sat across from each other at a small table near the window.
"What happened October seventeenth?" Claire asked.
Daniel stared at his coffee.
"Veronica called me to the plant."
"Why?"
"She said Dad had left a personal guarantee unfinished before he died."
"Thomas had been dead for almost a year."
"I know."
"Then how could he have left something unfinished that required signing that night?"
Daniel rubbed his thumb against the paper cup.
"She said the bank was threatening to accelerate debt unless the guarantee was corrected."
"Corrected by whom?"
"Me."
Claire waited.
Daniel swallowed.
"There were pages already prepared."
"Did you read them?"
His silence answered.
Claire felt anger rise.
"Daniel."
"Not all of them."
"Did you sign them?"
"Some."
"Did you sign Thomas's name?"
His head snapped up.
"No."
Claire watched his face carefully.
"Did you see anyone else sign Thomas's name?"
"No."
"Was Pamela Rowe there?"
Daniel nodded.
"She notarized my signature."
"Did she notarize anything else?"
"I don't know."
Claire leaned closer.
"Veronica says she has something on you."
Daniel shut his eyes.
"Because I signed a statement saying I had reviewed the full guarantee packet."
"When you hadn't."
"Yes."
"Why?"
His answer came out almost angrily.
"Because she said if I didn't, the company would fail and four hundred people could lose their jobs."
Claire stared at him.
"So you lied on a financial document."
"I was trying to save the company."
"You were trying to avoid saying no to Veronica."
Daniel looked away.
Claire hated that even now he wanted the softer explanation.
"What happened after you signed?"
"Nothing at first."
"And later?"
"Veronica started using the statement whenever I questioned her."
"How?"
"She would remind me that if regulators or lenders reviewed the packet, I could be accused of misrepresentation."
Claire's voice cooled.
"So she blackmailed you."
"She never called it that."
"People rarely label their own crimes for convenience."
Daniel winced.
"I know."
Claire folded her hands.
"Did she make you transfer our savings?"
"She told me the company needed seventy thousand before Monday."
"And you gave it to her."
"I thought I could replace it after the bridge loan closed."
"With a loan against our home."
"Yes."
"Using my forged signature."
Daniel stared at the table.
"I didn't copy your signature."
"Who did?"
"Veronica sent me the application already completed."
"And you submitted it?"
"I forwarded it to the lender contact."
Claire felt a sharp disappointment deeper than anger.
"You knew I had not signed it."
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"I told myself the lender would call you before closing."
"That is not the same as stopping it."
"I know."
"You keep saying that now."
He looked at her.
"Because now I do."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Daniel flinched.
"Now you are scared."
The truth of it hung between them.
He did not argue.
Claire continued.
"What else did Veronica make you do?"
"The school email."
"I know."
"She also had me sign a letter for a counselor."
Claire went still.
"What counselor?"
"A family therapist she knows."
"Why?"
Daniel's face tightened with shame.
"The letter said you had become increasingly volatile over the last six months."
Claire's fingers went numb.
"Did you send it?"
"I signed it."
"Did you send it?"
"Veronica took it."
Claire stood.
Daniel reached toward her wrist but stopped before touching her.
"Please."
Claire looked down at him.
"You signed a statement saying I was unstable before dinner."
"She said it was only documentation in case you tried to block access to the kids."
"Why would I block access to the kids before any of this happened?"
Daniel had no answer.
Claire's voice shook.
"Because she planned for it to happen."
Daniel looked up.
"I didn't know she was going to hit you."
"Maybe not."
Claire sat back down slowly.
"But she expected a confrontation."
The dinner seating.
Veronica beside Claire.
The children present.
Daniel already prepared to describe Claire as volatile.
The school form already changed.
The therapist letter already signed.
The financial transfer already initiated.
The home equity application already prepared.
It was too coordinated to be coincidence.
Claire felt sick.
"What was dinner supposed to be about?"
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Veronica wanted you to sign a consent acknowledging the home equity line."
"At dinner?"
"After dessert."
Claire almost laughed.
"She was going to tell me after taking the money?"
"She said you'd refuse if you had time to overthink it."
"She means if I had time to understand it."
Daniel nodded miserably.
"Probably."
Claire stared out the window.
"What did I say before she hit me?"
Daniel looked confused.
"You remember."
"I want you to say it."
He swallowed.
"You said you would never let her use the house as collateral."
"And then?"
"She said you had no idea how much the family had done for you."
"And I said the house belonged to both of us."
"Yes."
"Then she hit me."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Claire leaned back.
The slap had not been random fury.
It had come at the exact moment Claire rejected the transaction Veronica needed.
Daniel whispered, "I'm sorry."
Claire looked at him.
He began to cry quietly.
For years, that would have melted her anger.
She would have moved around the table and held him.
She would have reassured him that they would figure it out together.
This time she remained in her chair.
"Sorry is the beginning of your responsibility," she said.
"It isn't the end of mine."
Daniel wiped his face.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Tell Elena everything."
He looked terrified.
"That could expose me."
"Yes."
"I could lose my job."
"Yes."
"I could face legal problems."
"Yes."
Daniel stared at her.
Claire did not rescue him from the consequences.
"You asked what I want."
She stood.
"I want the truth to stop being something you offer only when lying becomes uncomfortable."
As she turned away, Daniel spoke.
"There is one more thing."
Claire stopped.
"What?"
"Veronica has a copy of a video from dinner."
Claire turned slowly.
"What video?"
"The hallway security camera caught part of it through the dining room doorway."
Claire's chest tightened.
"Part of what?"
"Your plate hitting her."
"Did it capture her slapping me?"
Daniel shook his head.
"The angle starts after that."
Claire understood immediately.
A video showing only Claire's retaliation could be devastating if presented without context.
"Where is the original recording?"
"The home system."
"Can Veronica access it?"
"She has the administrator password."
Claire stared at him.
"Why does your sister have the administrator password to our home security system?"
Daniel looked down.
The answer no longer mattered.
May you like
Claire took out her phone and called Elena.
The fight had just changed again.
