Chapter 9 - The Temporary Order.

The next attack arrived on paper.
At eight fifteen the following morning, a process server knocked on Rachel's door.
Claire signed for an envelope containing Daniel's emergency petition for temporary parenting orders.
Her hands went cold before she reached the second page.
The petition alleged Claire had become increasingly unpredictable.
It referenced the dinner confrontation.
It referenced Daniel's signed letter to the therapist.
It referenced Claire removing the children from the marital home after midnight.
It referenced her throwing a plate and slapping Daniel.
It did not mention Veronica's slap.
It did not mention the forged documents.
It did not mention the emptied savings account.
It did not mention Veronica's preplanned effort to build a record against Claire.
The petition asked the court to order the children returned to the marital home pending a hearing.
Claire called Elena with shaking hands.
"He filed it."
Elena sounded genuinely surprised.
"Daniel?"
"His name is on it."
"Send me every page."
Claire scanned the documents.
Elena called back eleven minutes later.
"The attorney listed is Martin Sloane."
"Do you know him?"
"He represents Hale Manufacturing in commercial matters."
Claire sat down.
"Veronica's lawyer."
"Effectively."
"So Daniel did this."
Elena paused.
"The signature appears to be his, but given what we already know, I want to confirm before assigning intent."
Claire almost snapped that intent no longer mattered.
Then her phone rang.
Daniel.
She answered.
"Did you file for temporary custody?"
"What?"
His confusion was immediate.
"Do not do that."
"Claire, what are you talking about?"
She read the title from the first page.
Daniel began breathing hard.
"I didn't file anything."
Claire looked at Rachel.
"Your signature is on it."
"Send me a picture."
She did.
Thirty seconds later, Daniel called back.
"That's the letter she had me sign."
"What letter?"
"She told me it was a draft statement for mediation."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Did you sign a blank signature page?"
Daniel did not answer.
"Daniel."
"There were pages above it."
"Did you read the final document?"
"No."
Claire pressed her fingers to her forehead.
"Of course not."
"I swear I didn't authorize a court filing."
"Then call the attorney whose name is on it."
"Veronica will know."
"Daniel, she just used your signature to ask a judge to take the children from me."
His voice cracked.
"I'll call."
Elena immediately prepared a response.
The emergency hearing was set for the following afternoon.
She included Claire's bank fraud declaration, the school records, Thomas's letter, and a sworn statement from Rachel describing the condition in which Claire and the children arrived after dinner.
She did not attach the study camera footage yet.
"Why not use the strongest evidence?" Claire asked.
Elena looked at her steadily.
"Because I want Veronica to commit to her version before she knows we can contradict it."
Claire understood.
The strategy felt ruthless.
It also felt necessary.
At noon, Daniel called again.
"Sloane won't talk to me."
"Your own supposed attorney won't talk to you?"
"His assistant said communications are being coordinated through Veronica because of company privilege."
Elena heard through speakerphone.
"Daniel, send Mr. Sloane an email stating clearly that you did not authorize the custody petition and demand immediate withdrawal."
Daniel hesitated.
"Will that be used against me?"
Elena's expression hardened.
"Doing nothing will be used against your children."
Daniel sent the email.
Two hours later, Sloane replied.
He claimed the petition had been prepared based on documents provided by his client and that he understood Daniel had approved the filing.
He did not identify the client.
Elena did not need him to.
At four, Veronica texted Claire.
You could have avoided all of this.
Claire showed Elena.
"Do I answer?"
"No."
Another message arrived.
Sign the consent and go home.
Then we can tell the court this was a misunderstanding.
Elena's eyebrows rose.
"There it is."
Claire stared at the screen.
Veronica was tying the custody petition directly to the home equity consent.
A coercive bargain.
Claire took screenshots.
Veronica sent a third message.
You are risking Daniel's future and the children's inheritance because you need to feel important.
Claire's anger sharpened.
Thomas had been right.
Veronica truly believed the family existed as an extension of company control.
That night, Mia found Claire sitting on the edge of the guest bed reviewing court papers.
"Are we going to have to live with Dad?"
Claire put the papers aside.
"A judge is going to listen to both sides."
"What if the judge believes Aunt Veronica?"
Claire's chest tightened.
"Then we tell the truth clearly and keep telling it."
Mia looked at her hands.
"Can I tell the judge something?"
Claire hesitated.
"What do you want to tell them?"
Mia swallowed.
"Aunt Veronica talked to Dad before dinner."
Claire went still.
"About what?"
"I was upstairs."
Mia's voice became quiet.
"I came down because I wanted water, and they were in the hallway."
"What did you hear?"
Mia looked frightened.
"Aunt Veronica said, 'If she says no, push harder.'"
Claire did not interrupt.
"Dad said, 'The kids are here.'"
Mia looked at her mother.
"And Aunt Veronica said, 'Good.'"
Claire felt nausea rise.
"Are you sure?"
Mia nodded.
"Then she said, 'She behaves differently when they're watching.'"
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
The children had not merely been unfortunate witnesses.
They had been part of the pressure plan.
Claire reached for Mia's hands.
"Thank you for telling me."
"Did I do something wrong by not telling you sooner?"
"No."
Claire spoke firmly.
"You never have to manage adult problems for us."
Mia nodded but still looked worried.
Claire told Elena immediately.
Elena advised against questioning Mia further.
"We do not want anyone claiming she was coached."
The next morning, before the hearing, Daniel sent Claire a voice message.
His voice was low and urgent.
"I found the original dinner clip in the security company's local cache."
Claire listened twice.
"It has the audio before the camera turns on."
Her heart pounded.
May you like
Then Daniel said the sentence that made her stand up.
"Claire, Veronica knew about the audio, and she tried to delete it last night."
