Chapter 1 - The Red Light Above.

The marble floor felt colder than Emily Carter had ever imagined stone could feel.
She lay on her side beneath the sweeping staircase, one arm wrapped around the curve of her stomach and the other pressed against the polished floor to keep herself upright.
Her breath came in short, careful pulls.
Across from her, Vanessa Hale stood in a glittering sapphire gown as though she had stepped out of a ballroom instead of into the aftermath of cruelty.
Only seconds earlier, Vanessa's face had carried a look Emily would never forget.
It had not been anger.
It had been satisfaction.
"Please, stop," Emily had whispered.
Vanessa had tilted her head, watching her with the faint smile of someone certain there would be no witnesses.
Then the front door opened.
Everything changed in an instant.
Vanessa's smile vanished.
Her posture collapsed.
She dropped to the floor with a theatrical gasp just as Ethan rushed into the foyer.
"Oh my God, I slipped!"
Ethan stopped so abruptly that his leather briefcase struck the side of the doorway.
His eyes moved from Vanessa to Emily and back again.
"What just happened?"
Vanessa reached for him first.
"Ethan, help me."
Emily saw the calculation behind the panic in Vanessa's eyes.
It was there for less than a second.
Then Vanessa became fragile again.
Emily forced herself to sit higher.
"She's lying."
Ethan's face tightened.
He looked at Emily as though he had misheard her.
Vanessa's fingers closed around his wrist.
"She's confused."
Emily ignored her.
"Look up."
Ethan followed Emily's gaze.
The small dome camera above the staircase blinked red.
Vanessa looked up too.
For the first time since Ethan entered the house, she stopped acting.
Her face went blank.
Ethan noticed.
He slowly pulled his hand away from hers.
"That camera records continuously."
Vanessa swallowed.
"I know."
The answer came too quickly.
Ethan crossed the foyer and knelt beside Emily.
"Are you hurt?"
"I don't know."
That frightened him more than if she had said yes.
He took out his phone immediately.
Vanessa pushed herself upright.
"You're calling an ambulance?"
Ethan stared at her.
"My pregnant wife is on the floor."
Vanessa's expression softened into offended disbelief.
"I fell too."
"Then they can check you too."
Vanessa said nothing.
Emily watched her carefully.
She had known Vanessa for almost three years.
Vanessa had always been charming when other people were present.
She remembered birthdays.
She sent expensive gifts.
She hugged too long for photographs and laughed loudly enough for everyone to hear.
But when Ethan left a room, something changed.
Compliments became insults disguised as concern.
Questions became warnings.
And over the last two months, Vanessa's interest in Emily's pregnancy had become almost obsessive.
"You must be exhausted all the time."
"Are you sure you want to raise a child in this family?"
"Ethan had such a different life before you."
Emily had dismissed the comments because Vanessa was Ethan's oldest family friend.
Their fathers had built businesses together.
Their families had vacationed together.
Vanessa had been around so long that Ethan described her as practically a cousin.
Emily had believed that history made her safe.
Now she knew history could also make someone feel entitled.
Sirens approached the villa.
Vanessa stood slowly.
"Emily, tell him the truth."
Emily stared at her.
"I am."
"You lost your balance."
"No."
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
"Think carefully."
Ethan looked between them.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Vanessa gave a small helpless shake of her head.
"Nothing."
The paramedics entered moments later.
They moved efficiently, asking Emily questions while Ethan stayed close.
Vanessa hovered near the staircase.
One of the paramedics glanced at her.
"Were you involved in the fall?"
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Emily answered first.
"There wasn't a fall."
The foyer became silent.
The paramedic looked at Ethan.
Ethan looked at the camera.
"I want the footage preserved right now."
Vanessa's shoulders stiffened.
Ethan called the villa's security manager, Martin Doyle.
Martin answered on the third ring.
"Mr. Carter?"
"Lock the security archive."
"What happened?"
"Do not let anyone access or delete anything from the foyer camera."
There was a pause.
Then Martin said something that made Ethan stand perfectly still.
Before Martin finished speaking, Emily remembered something else from earlier that afternoon.
Vanessa had asked whether Ethan was still using the old security company.
At the time, Emily thought it was casual conversation.
Vanessa had been standing near the staircase with a glass of sparkling water, studying the ceiling as if admiring the architecture.
"Did Martin ever replace those old cameras?" she had asked.
Emily had answered without thinking.
"Most of them."
"The foyer one is original."
Vanessa had smiled.
"Old systems always have strange little weaknesses."
Emily had laughed because Vanessa said it like a joke.
Now the memory felt completely different.
She told Ethan.
His expression tightened further.
"She asked about the cameras today?"
"About an hour before you came home."
Ethan looked toward the staircase as if he could see the conversation replaying there.
Vanessa had not arrived angry.
She had arrived prepared.
That possibility frightened Emily more than the argument itself.
Anger could explode without warning.
Preparation meant Vanessa had imagined what might happen before she ever crossed the foyer.
The paramedic beside Emily gently reminded her not to move.
Emily nodded, but her thoughts would not slow down.
She remembered Vanessa checking her phone twice.
She remembered Vanessa glancing at the front door.
She remembered a faint vibration from the guest-suite tablet on the console table.
At the time, none of those details mattered.
Now every one of them felt like a breadcrumb left by someone who had been too confident to notice she was leaving a trail.
"Sir, someone already accessed that camera remotely twelve minutes ago."
Emily felt the room tilt in a way that had nothing to do with pain.
Ethan's gaze moved slowly toward Vanessa.
Vanessa looked just as shocked as everyone else.
But Emily noticed one thing.
Vanessa was no longer looking at the camera.
She was looking at Ethan's phone.
May you like
And she was smiling with only her eyes.
