Chapter 14 - The Accountant From Graham's Past.

Lucas Reed arrived at police headquarters with an attorney and the stiff expression of a man who had already decided he would say as little as possible.

Emily did not attend the interview.

Brooks later summarized it in the apartment.

Lucas admitted he had worked for Graham Hale.

He denied helping Vanessa forge anything.

He denied creating the false medical record.

He denied knowing how Vanessa obtained access to the foundation's network.

Then Aaron Patel compared the foundation Wi-Fi logs with Lucas's laptop history.

At 8:17 p.m. on the night the fake medical appointment was created, Lucas's laptop connected to the exact access point used to register it.

That did not prove he typed the information.

It proved he had lied about being gone by seven.

Brooks confronted him.

Lucas changed his story.

He had returned for a forgotten charger.

Security cameras showed him staying forty-three minutes.

He changed his story again.

He had taken a private call.

Phone records showed no call.

By the third change, his attorney asked for a break.

Emily listened to Brooks and felt no satisfaction.

The number of people involved kept growing.

Every new participant made Vanessa more dangerous, not less.

"What did Graham have on Lucas?" Ethan asked.

Brooks looked at the notes.

"Maybe nothing."

"Then why help Vanessa?"

Daniel Mercer answered.

"Money."

He placed a report on the table.

The Carter Foundation had discovered three unexplained consulting payments totaling six hundred thousand dollars over eighteen months.

The money went to a Delaware company called Alder Strategic.

Alder Strategic transferred much of it to another company called Blue Meridian.

Blue Meridian paid Vanessa's mortgage, legal bills, and private investigator.

Emily stared at the diagram of transfers.

"Lucas was funding her with foundation money."

Daniel nodded.

"It appears so."

Ethan's face tightened.

"She didn't need Dad's money."

"Not all of it."

"Then why keep asking?"

Emily understood.

"Because the money wasn't the point."

Everyone looked at her.

"Every payment from Richard or Ethan created evidence of a hidden relationship."

"Every refusal gave her another grievance."

"She was building both stories at the same time."

Daniel nodded slowly.

Vanessa was not simply extorting the family.

She was assembling a structure in which every outcome benefited her.

If Richard paid, she gained money and proof of secret dealings.

If he refused, she gained a reason to escalate.

If Ethan paid, she could imply intimacy.

If Ethan refused, she could claim abandonment.

If Emily stayed, Vanessa could target the trust.

If Emily left, Vanessa could say the marriage had collapsed under hidden wrongdoing.

Brooks's phone buzzed.

"Lucas wants to talk again."

This time, Lucas requested that his attorney remain present but asked for a cooperation agreement.

By evening, Brooks had enough to share a partial account.

Lucas said Vanessa approached him eighteen months earlier.

She knew he had once worked for Graham.

She also knew something else.

Lucas had falsified expense reports years earlier while working for Graham and had never disclosed it on his Carter Foundation application.

The amount was small compared with his current salary.

But the lie could have ended his career.

Vanessa threatened to expose him.

At first, she asked only for information.

Foundation schedules.

Guest lists.

Copies of old Carter-Hale correspondence.

Then she asked him to approve consulting payments.

Lucas complied.

Then she asked for network access.

He gave her a temporary credential.

Then she asked him to create a medical appointment under Emily's name.

Lucas claimed he refused.

Vanessa did it herself while using his laptop.

"Do you believe him?" Ethan asked.

Brooks shrugged.

"I believe he is minimizing his role."

"What else did he do?"

"He gave Vanessa a copy of the trust summary."

Emily closed her eyes.

That answered one question.

"Anything about the security system?"

"No."

"The forged transfer?"

"He says he helped format it but thought it was a negotiation draft."

Daniel snorted.

"Convenient."

Brooks agreed.

"Very."

The most important revelation came last.

Lucas claimed Vanessa had not created the plan alone.

Emily's entire body tensed.

"Who?"

Brooks looked at Celeste, who had come to the apartment after surrendering her phone.

"He says Vanessa had a partner inside the family."

Celeste went pale.

"I did not help with any forgery."

"Lucas didn't name you."

Celeste looked relieved for exactly one second.

Then Brooks continued.

"He named Richard."

Ethan stared.

"My father?"

"Lucas says Richard paid Vanessa through Blue Meridian."

"Why would he do that?"

"He claims Richard wanted Vanessa to stop pursuing the old partnership claim."

Daniel opened the payment report again.

"That doesn't make him a partner in her crimes."

"No."

"But it explains how she had money."

"Maybe."

Emily thought back to Richard lying about the airport meeting.

The hidden original agreement.

The decades of payments.

Richard had a long history of trying to make problems disappear through private arrangements.

That habit could look like conspiracy even when it was only cowardice.

Vanessa knew that.

"She built this around all of our weaknesses," Emily said.

Ethan looked at her.

"Dad's secrecy."

"Your guilt."

"Celeste's resentment."

"Lucas's dishonesty."

"My identity documents."

Emily paused.

"She didn't need everyone to be guilty."

"She only needed everyone to have something to hide."

The room became silent.

Brooks nodded.

"That's a good way to describe it."

The next morning, Richard agreed to turn over all financial records related to Vanessa.

Among hundreds of pages, Aaron found a recurring transfer memo.

G.H. RESOLUTION.

The transfers began eleven years earlier.

They stopped six months ago.

The final payment was three million dollars.

Emily stared at the amount.

"Three million?"

Richard's explanation was immediate.

"It was supposed to be final."

"Final for what?"

"For everything."

"Did Vanessa sign a release?"

Daniel asked.

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"Where is it?"

Richard looked at him.

"In the same safe where I kept the original agreement."

The room went quiet.

Both documents were missing.

Vanessa now possessed the paper proving a claim existed and, likely, the paper proving she had already accepted money to settle it.

One document could make her look cheated.

The other could expose her as dishonest.

Emily understood why the safe had been opened.

Vanessa had not stolen history.

She had stolen the ability to choose which version of history anyone else could see.

That evening, a text arrived on Emily's phone from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the signed original agreement lying on a dark wooden table.

Beside it was Richard's missing settlement release.

Under the photograph was a message.

COME TO THE FOUNDATION GALA TOMORROW NIGHT.

COME WITHOUT POLICE.

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH, BRING ETHAN.

Emily read the final line twice.

DON'T BRING RICHARD.

Brooks wanted Emily to ignore the message.

Daniel wanted the gala cancelled.

Martin wanted the entire building swept twice.

Ethan wanted Vanessa found before anyone entered the ballroom.

Emily listened to all of them.

Then she asked one question.

"If we do exactly what fear tells us to do, what does Vanessa learn?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Emily continued.

"She learns that she can move this family by sending one text."

Brooks folded her arms.

"That doesn't mean we take unnecessary risks."

"I agree."

"Then what are you proposing?"

Emily looked at the gala invitation on the table.

"We go, but not on her terms."

That became the plan.

No one would improvise.

No one would chase a message alone.

No family member would carry confidential documents.

Every room Vanessa could reasonably access would have independent recording equipment controlled by police, not Carter security.

Emily would wear a concealed audio transmitter.

Ethan would wear one too.

Celeste would not know the officers' identities, which reduced the risk of accidental disclosure.

Richard would be kept away because Vanessa specifically expected him not to attend.

The irony was almost absurd.

The gala had been designed to celebrate generosity.

Now it would become a carefully controlled stage where everyone waited for a woman obsessed with controlling stages.

Emily looked at the message again.

HE ALREADY KNOWS HOW THIS ENDS.

For the first time, she did not feel intimidated by the line.

She felt curious.

Vanessa still believed she was the only person who knew the ending.

That confidence might finally make her careless.
