Chapter 5 - The Signature Under Her Name.

By morning, the hospital room had become a temporary investigation center.
Ethan's lawyer, Daniel Mercer, arrived before sunrise with two assistants and a face that suggested he had already been awake all night.
He examined the forged transfer document without touching it directly.
"This is sophisticated."
Emily leaned back against the pillows.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning whoever prepared it had access to authentic signatures, corporate formatting, internal addresses, and the correct legal language."
Ethan looked at him.
"Could Vanessa do that?"
"Not alone."
The answer landed heavily.
Daniel turned to Detective Brooks.
"Have you confirmed whether the company acted on the transfer?"
"Not fully."
"Then we need an injunction immediately."
Ethan stepped aside to make calls.
Emily watched him with mixed emotions.
She believed he had not signed the document.
But she also knew there were parts of his history with Vanessa that he had chosen not to tell her.
That silence had created space for doubt.
And Vanessa seemed to understand exactly how to use it.
Daniel noticed Emily watching Ethan.
"You should know something."
Emily looked at him.
"What?"
"Vanessa contacted me last month."
Ethan stopped speaking mid-call.
"She what?"
Daniel faced him.
"She asked whether an unsigned partnership agreement between your father and hers could still be enforced."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I told her no and assumed that ended it."
Emily looked from one man to the other.
"What agreement?"
Daniel opened his briefcase.
"I brought a copy."
The document was nearly twenty-five years old.
It described a proposed joint venture between Ethan's father, Richard Carter, and Vanessa's father, Graham Hale.
The venture had never been finalized.
But one clause promised the Hale family a minority stake in a real-estate subsidiary if certain financing conditions were met.
The signatures were missing.
"So it was never valid," Emily said.
"Correct," Daniel replied.
"Then why does Vanessa care now?"
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"Because that subsidiary owns the land beneath the Carter River District project."
Emily knew the name.
Everyone in the city did.
The project was a massive redevelopment plan involving hotels, apartments, parks, and commercial buildings.
It had been discussed for years.
Construction was scheduled to begin in two months.
"How much is the land worth?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Today?"
"Yes."
"Approximately two hundred and eighty million dollars."
Emily felt a chill.
Vanessa's behavior suddenly had a number attached to it.
Ethan sat beside the bed.
"She believes her father was cheated."
"Was he?" Emily asked.
"My father said Graham walked away from the deal."
"And Vanessa says?"
"That my father forced him out."
Emily thought about the forged signatures.
"If she got voting rights, what could she do?"
Daniel answered.
"Delay the project."
"That's all?"
"A delay on that scale could cost tens of millions."
"So she could use the threat of delay to force a settlement."
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly."
Detective Brooks looked toward Ethan.
"And your wife?"
Ethan frowned.
"What about her?"
"Why target Emily physically?"
No one answered.
Emily looked down at her stomach.
A terrible possibility surfaced.
"The trust."
Ethan's head turned sharply.
Daniel closed his eyes for half a second.
That reaction told Emily she was right.
"What trust?" Brooks asked.
Emily stared at Ethan.
"Tell her."
Ethan spoke reluctantly.
"My grandfather's family trust controls part of Carter Holdings."
"And?"
"When my first child is born, a portion of my voting interest transfers into a protected branch for that child."
Brooks's expression changed.
"How much?"
"Enough to make certain hostile transfers impossible without an independent trustee."
Emily's hand tightened over the blanket.
"Who is the independent trustee?"
Ethan looked at her.
"You."
Emily stared at him.
"You never told me that."
"It doesn't activate until the baby is born."
"Vanessa knew?"
Silence.
Emily felt anger rise through the fear.
"Did Vanessa know?"
Daniel answered this time.
"Her attorney requested a copy of the trust summary two months ago during a separate dispute."
The room became still.
Emily understood what that meant.
Vanessa had a financial motive connected directly to the pregnancy.
Detective Brooks's phone vibrated.
She read a message and looked up.
"We found Vanessa's car."
"Where?" Ethan asked.
"At the airport."
Emily's pulse jumped.
"Did she leave?"
Brooks shook her head.
"No."
She turned the phone around.
A surveillance image showed Vanessa entering the airport parking garage at 11:02 p.m.
She was not alone.
Emily asked Brooks to zoom in on the airport image.
Richard was not carrying luggage.
Vanessa was.
A medium black suitcase rolled behind her.
Her posture did not look like someone rushing blindly away from a crisis.
It looked organized.
Brooks requested earlier airport footage.
Another camera showed Vanessa arriving twenty minutes before Richard.
She had gone directly to a bank of rental lockers near the parking garage.
She opened Locker 44, removed a brown document case, and placed it inside her suitcase.
"Can we open the locker?" Ethan asked.
"With a warrant," Brooks said.
By noon, investigators did.
The locker was empty except for a disposable phone charger and a receipt from a print shop.
The receipt was dated two days earlier.
The order described one hundred and eighty pages of color copies, several laminated floor plans, and three bound legal packets.
Emily felt the room become colder.
"She printed all of this before the foyer."
Brooks nodded.
"At least some of it."
The attack had not started the operation.
It had interrupted an operation already underway.
That distinction mattered.
Vanessa might have lost control for ten seconds, but she had been preparing something much larger long before those ten seconds arrived.
Walking beside her was Ethan's father, Richard Carter.

And Richard had been telling everyone for six months that he had not spoken to Vanessa in years.
