Chapter 11 - Vanessa Chooses a Side

Vanessa moved toward Ethan.

“I had nothing to do with Charles.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Did you know your father was paying him?”

“No.”

George remained silent.

“Dad?”

Vanessa turned.

“Tell him.”

George’s face had become stone.

“Don’t say another word.”

She stared.

“You told me those companies were tax structures.”

“Vanessa.”

“You told me Marcus was trying to extort us.”

“Stop talking.”

Something changed in Vanessa.

For the first time all evening, she looked less like a polished socialite and more like a frightened daughter.

“You used my name.”

George’s expression tightened.

“You benefited from everything I built.”

“That doesn’t mean you can put my signature on whatever you want.”

“You signed.”

“Because you told me to.”

Patricia covered her face.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“You knew enough to confront Marcus.”

She turned toward him.

“I knew something was wrong.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was going to.”

“When?”

She opened her mouth.

No answer came.

I watched her carefully.

This was the moment people often revealed themselves.

Not when they were powerful.

When power was disappearing.

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“If I tell you everything, can we fix us?”

His expression changed.

“This isn’t a negotiation.”

Her eyes filled.

“Please.”

“Tell the truth because it is the truth.”

She looked down.

George spoke sharply.

“Vanessa, we are leaving.”

She turned on him.

“No.”

He stared at her.

“No?”

“You were going to let me marry into this mess without telling me what you did.”

George laughed.

“You think the marriage had nothing to do with the deal?”

The room went silent.

Vanessa’s face drained.

Ethan stared at him.

“What did you say?”

George realized he had gone too far.

But anger kept him talking.

“The partnership was good for both families.”

“My marriage is not a merger.”

“Grow up.”

George stepped forward.

“Families like ours have always understood that relationships matter.”

Vanessa whispered.

“Dad.”

George ignored her.

“You think she met you accidentally?”

Ethan stopped moving.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Vanessa looked at her father in horror.

“Don’t.”

George laughed without humor.

“Why not?”

He pointed toward Ethan.

“He deserves honesty, apparently.”

Ethan’s voice was barely audible.

“What does he mean?”

Vanessa began crying.

I knew before she answered.

Her meeting Ethan at the Atlanta charity gala had not been coincidence.

George had arranged for her to attend.

He knew Ethan would be there.

He knew the causes Ethan supported.

He knew what kind of woman Ethan admired.

Vanessa shook her head.

“It wasn’t supposed to become real.”

Ethan looked like he had been struck.

“What?”

“My father wanted an introduction.”

She reached for him.

“But I really did fall in love with you.”

Ethan stepped backward.

Vanessa sobbed harder.

“I did.”

He stared at her.

“Was anything true?”

“Yes.”

“Your charity work?”

She looked down.

“My interest in the housing foundation?”

Silence.

“The story about volunteering every Saturday?”

Tears rolled down her face.

“No.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Vanessa reached for him again.

May you like

He moved away.

And that distance between them felt larger than the entire lawn outside.
