Chapter 15 - My Husband’s Name

I sat down.
Not because I wanted to.
Because my legs no longer trusted me.
Edward Carter had been dead seven years.
We had been married for thirty-eight.
I knew his strengths.
His weaknesses.
His temper.
His generosity.
I believed I knew his secrets.
Perhaps every widow believes that until someone produces a ledger.
“What kind of business?”
My voice sounded distant.
Patricia looked afraid.
“I don’t know everything.”
George laughed.
“You know nothing.”
She turned on him.
“I know enough.”
He stopped.
Patricia looked at me.
“Years ago, George and Edward invested in land projects together.”
I remembered several.
Most had been sold before Carter Meridian expanded nationally.
“Legal projects?”
“Yes.”
She hesitated.
“At first.”
I felt Ethan watching me.
“Continue.”
Patricia swallowed.
“George later started paying intermediaries for early information on zoning changes.”
My stomach tightened.
“Edward found out.”
George interrupted.
“Edward benefited.”
Patricia shook her head.
“No.”
George glared.
“You weren’t in the meetings.”
“But I heard the argument.”
She looked at me.
“Edward came to our house.”
“When?”
“Nine years ago.”
Two years before his death.
“He told George to stop using Carter’s name.”
I closed my eyes.
I remembered that year.
Edward had been distracted for weeks.
He told me a real estate partnership had become complicated.
I never asked enough questions.
Patricia continued.
“George threatened him.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“With what?”
“With records showing they had both invested in early deals.”
George shouted.
“That’s enough.”
Patricia ignored him.
“Edward said he would report everything himself if George continued.”
I looked at George.
“Did he?”
George smiled coldly.
“Your husband wasn’t a saint.”
“I never said he was.”
That answer surprised him.
I stood.
“But I know the difference between imperfection and corruption.”
George shrugged.
“Do you?”
His eyes moved around the mansion.
“How do you think fortunes like yours are built?”
“Slowly.”
I stepped closer.
“With mistakes.”
“With risks.”
“With sleepless nights.”
“And sometimes by saying no to money that would cost more than it pays.”
George’s smile disappeared.
Ethan looked at me.
“Did Dad know about Charles?”
“No.”
Charles had joined after Edward’s death.
But perhaps George had chosen Charles because he already understood the Carter system.
Marcus’s voice came through the phone again.
“There’s more.”
I looked down.
“What?”
“One photographed page has a note beside EC.”
“What note?”
Marcus paused.
“Refused continuation.”
I closed my eyes.
Relief came first.
Then anger.
Edward had stopped.
But he had hidden the entire episode from me.
Even after decades together.
Even when it might have protected our company later.
Ethan seemed to understand.
“Dad tried to get out.”
“Yes.”
I whispered it.
George shook his head.
“He got scared.”
“Maybe.”
I looked at him.
“But he stopped.”
George’s expression hardened.
“And then he died.”
The words landed strangely.
Too deliberately.
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
George said nothing.
Patricia looked terrified.
Vanessa turned toward her father.
“Dad?”
I stepped closer.
“What did you mean?”
May you like
George smiled faintly.
But this time, nobody in the room believed it was harmless.
