Chapter 3 - The Envelope

Ethan stared at the envelope.

Vanessa stared at her father.

George stared at me.

That told me more than any confession could have.

“What information?”

Ethan’s voice was tight.

I rested one hand on the envelope.

“Financial records.”

George stepped forward.

“This is becoming inappropriate.”

I looked at him.

“So was ordering someone to search my bag.”

His jaw tightened.

Patricia touched his arm.

“George.”

He stopped.

Ethan turned toward me.

“Mom, please.”

I understood the look in his eyes.

He wanted this to be a misunderstanding.

He wanted me to say the documents were harmless.

He wanted Vanessa to apologize and somehow return the evening to what it had been.

Life rarely offers that kind of mercy.

“Two weeks ago,” I said, “your office submitted documents connected to the proposed Carter-Mitchell hospitality fund.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

The Mitchell family owned luxury hotels and event properties across several states.

At least, that was what their public reports claimed.

The proposed partnership would place nearly eighty million dollars of Carter capital into a new development fund controlled jointly by Ethan and George.

The engagement had made the business relationship appear almost inevitable.

“I reviewed the numbers.”

George gave a short laugh.

“Your analysts already reviewed them.”

“Yes.”

I looked directly at him.

“And then I reviewed your analysts.”

His smile vanished.

I opened the envelope.

Vanessa moved closer to Ethan.

“Please don’t let her turn our engagement into some corporate interrogation.”

Ethan did not answer.

I removed several pages.

“The Mitchell group reported ownership interests in seven properties securing the proposed fund.”

George folded his arms.

“Correct.”

“Three are heavily leveraged.”

His expression remained steady.

“One is currently tied to litigation.”

Patricia looked at him.

“Two were valued using projections from companies connected to members of your own board.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

George spoke sharply.

“That is not illegal.”

“I did not say it was.”

I turned another page.

“But this may be.”

The room went silent.

I placed a document on the table.

George looked down.

His face lost color.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“What is it?”

He did not answer.

“It is a payment schedule.”

I looked at Ethan.

“Millions moved through consulting companies during the eighteen months before the proposed partnership.”

Ethan picked up the page.

His eyes moved rapidly across the numbers.

“Who owns these companies?”

“That is the interesting question.”

George reached for the document.

Ethan pulled it back.

“Who owns them?”

George’s voice lowered.

“This isn’t the place.”

“Then give me the answer.”

Patricia stepped forward.

“Ethan, business structures can be complicated.”

He looked at her.

“I asked George.”

Vanessa grabbed Ethan’s arm.

“Why are you acting like my family is on trial?”

I watched her carefully.

She was angry.

But she did not look surprised.

That mattered.

I removed one final page from the envelope.

“Because one of those companies was formed using Vanessa’s legal signature.”

Every eye in the room turned toward her.

Vanessa stopped breathing for a second.

May you like

Then she looked at her father.

And for the first time that evening, the fear on her face looked completely real.
