Chapter 16 - The Whitmore Vote

Three weeks later, Whitmore Holdings held an emergency board meeting.

The press surrounded the headquarters.

Michael’s arrest had become national news.

Thomas had resigned after investigators discovered he had concealed evidence that Michael was alive.

Rebecca had been cleared of involvement in the theft.

Ethan had accepted a cooperation agreement while awaiting charges related to forgery and conspiracy.

Cole Development entered restructuring.

Charles Cole resigned as CEO.

Everything connected to the wedding had collapsed.

Now Robert Whitmore sat at the head of the board table.

Mary sat beside him.

Twelve directors waited.

Robert stood.

“For years, I believed protecting this company meant controlling everything.”

Mary looked at her father.

Robert continued.

“My son taught me what secrecy costs.”

He paused.

“My daughter taught me what truth requires.”

He looked at Mary.

“I am retiring today.”

Several directors shifted.

The succession vote would happen immediately.

Rebecca nominated Mary.

A director named Harold Bennett nominated himself.

The vote began.

Mary needed seven votes.

The first five came quickly.

Then two directors voted for Bennett.

Thomas’s former allies remained uncertain.

Mary sat quietly.

She had spent her life trying not to rely on her last name.

Now she was being asked to carry it.

The eighth director voted for Bennett.

The ninth voted for Mary.

Six to three.

One more.

Director Paul Ramsey looked toward her.

“What happens to Cole Development?”

Mary answered without hesitation.

“Whitmore will not purchase a failing company simply because it once belonged to the family of the man I almost married.”

Ramsey nodded.

“And the harbor property?”

“We evaluate it on financial merit.”

“No revenge?”

“No favors.”

Ramsey smiled.

“My vote is for Mary Whitmore.”

Seven.

The remaining directors voted.

Final count.

Nine to three.

Mary became chairwoman.

Robert stood.

Applause filled the room.

Mary remained seated for several seconds.

She remembered the hotel hallway.

The broken rose beneath her shoe.

The ring on the table.

The phone call.

Everything had begun with humiliation.

But humiliation had revealed what comfort had hidden.

Mary finally stood.

She looked around the boardroom.

“My first decision is simple.”

Everyone waited.

“No more family exceptions.”

Robert raised an eyebrow.

Mary continued.

“Every contract involving a Whitmore relative will receive independent review.”

Rebecca smiled.

“And my second decision.”

Mary looked toward Daniel.

“Publish the findings of the investigation.”

Several directors looked uncomfortable.

Ramsey asked, “All of them?”

“All legally releasable findings.”

Robert studied his daughter with pride.

Mary finished.

“Our reputation will survive the truth.”

May you like

She paused.

“It will not survive another secret.”
