Chapter 2 - The Name Ethan Feared

The elevator doors began closing.

Ethan forced his hand between them.

The doors opened again.

“Mary, you don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Mary stepped backward.

“I understand perfectly.”

Ethan entered the elevator with her.

Lauren remained in the hallway.

For the first time that evening, Ethan was no longer behaving like a guilty fiancé.

He was behaving like a businessman watching his company burn.

“You called Daniel Pierce.”

“Yes.”

“You promised your family lawyers would stay out of our marriage.”

Mary looked at him.

“We don’t have a marriage.”

The elevator descended.

Ethan’s breathing grew faster.

Daniel Pierce was not simply Mary’s attorney.

He was chief counsel for Whitmore Holdings.

The Whitmore family owned hotels, commercial property, private aviation interests, and investment funds across the country.

Most outsiders believed Mary had walked away from the family empire years earlier.

Ethan believed it too.

That misunderstanding had been useful.

Mary had spent three years allowing Ethan to think she was financially comfortable but largely disconnected from her family.

She wanted to know whether he loved Mary the woman.

Not Mary Whitmore the beneficiary.

Now she knew.

The elevator stopped at the thirty-seventh floor.

Two men in dark suits were waiting.

Ethan recognized one of them immediately.

“Mr. Pierce.”

Daniel Pierce stepped forward.

He was sixty-three, silver-haired, calm, and almost impossible to intimidate.

“Ms. Whitmore.”

Mary handed him her phone.

“Start with the hotel.”

Ethan stared between them.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at him.

“It means Mr. Cole that your access privileges have been revoked.”

“This is my wedding.”

Daniel shook his head.

“This was Miss Whitmore’s wedding.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“I paid for this entire weekend.”

Mary looked at him.

“No, Ethan.”

His eyes moved toward her.

“I did.”

The silence that followed seemed louder than shouting.

Mary continued.

“The ballroom.”

Ethan said nothing.

“The flowers.”

His face slowly changed.

“The orchestra.”

Daniel watched quietly.

“The presidential suite.”

Mary stepped closer.

“And the private aircraft you planned to use for our honeymoon.”

Ethan’s lips parted.

Mary gave him a cold, exhausted smile.

“Did you really believe your company paid for all of that?”

Ethan looked toward Daniel.

Daniel removed a folder from his briefcase.

“There is another matter.”

Mary had almost forgotten Lauren’s words.

The documents.

“What documents?”

Ethan immediately interrupted.

“There are no documents.”

Daniel looked at him.

“That was not the question.”

Mary turned toward Daniel.

“Find them.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“You don’t get to investigate me because I made one mistake.”

Mary’s expression hardened.

“One mistake was kissing her.”

She pointed toward the elevator.

“Whatever documents you are afraid of are something else.”

The elevator doors opened again.

This time four hotel security officers were standing outside.

Behind them were Ethan’s parents.

His mother Victoria looked furious.

His father Charles looked confused.

“What is going on?”

Ethan said nothing.

Mary looked directly at Charles Cole.

“Your son cheated on me fifteen minutes before our wedding.”

Victoria gasped.

Charles closed his eyes.

Mary continued.

“And apparently that isn’t the worst thing he did.”

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

He read the incoming message.

Then his expression changed.

“Mary.”

She looked at him.

May you like

“We found the documents.”

Ethan turned pale.
