Chapter 4 - The Contract

Mary did not remember leaving the ballroom.

Ten minutes later, she was sitting in a private conference room on the forty-second floor.

Her wedding gown spread across the carpet around her like something belonging to another woman.

Daniel placed the documents on the table.

Robert and Eleanor sat across from her.

Charles Cole stood near the window.

Victoria had refused to come.

Ethan was being kept in another room.

Daniel opened the first folder.

“These were recovered from a locked briefcase in Mr. Cole’s suite.”

Mary looked at the pages.

Her signature appeared on the final sheet.

She knew instantly that it was not hers.

“Forgery.”

Daniel nodded.

“The document transfers temporary proxy control over thirty-two percent of your Whitmore Hospitality voting rights to your spouse.”

Robert’s face hardened.

Mary continued reading.

The agreement would become effective exactly twelve months after marriage.

Ethan would then have voting authority over a block of shares worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Mary felt sick.

“I never signed this.”

“We know.”

Daniel opened another folder.

“This is more concerning.”

Inside were emails between Ethan and an attorney named Grant Mercer.

Mary recognized the name.

Mercer represented Cole Development Group.

One message contained a sentence Mary read three times.

Once control is established, the Whitmore board can be forced to approve the acquisition.

Mary looked at Charles.

“What acquisition?”

Charles did not answer.

Robert did.

“The Cole harbor project.”

Mary knew the project.

Everyone in commercial real estate did.

Cole Development had purchased nearly four hundred acres of contaminated industrial property near Baltimore.

The company claimed it would become a luxury residential and marina development.

Investors had begun pulling out after environmental problems were discovered.

Whitmore Holdings had rejected an opportunity to rescue the project six months earlier.

Mary slowly looked toward Charles.

“Your company is dying.”

Charles’s shoulders dropped.

“We have liquidity problems.”

Robert laughed without humor.

“You have eight hundred million dollars in debt.”

Mary turned sharply.

Ethan had told her the company was expanding.

Charles lowered his voice.

“He didn’t tell you?”

Mary closed her eyes.

Of course Ethan had not told her.

Daniel moved another document forward.

“There’s more.”

Mary opened it.

It was an internal strategy memo.

The heading read PROJECT BRIDE.

Mary stared at those two words.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Robert’s face became terrifyingly still.

Mary read the first line.

Objective: establish permanent access to Whitmore family assets through marriage to Mary Whitmore.

Her vision blurred.

Not because she was crying.

Because she could suddenly see every moment of the previous three years differently.

The charity gala where Ethan had introduced himself.

The accidental lunch two weeks later.

His fascination with her work.

His proposal in Napa.

His insistence on a twelve-month waiting period after the wedding before they bought a house.

None of it had been accidental.

Mary closed the folder.

“Bring Ethan in.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Mary.”

“Bring him in.”

Several minutes later, the door opened.

Ethan entered.

His confidence was gone.

Mary pushed the document across the table.

He saw the heading.

PROJECT BRIDE.

Mary watched his face carefully.

Then she asked the only question that mattered.

“Was any of it real?”
