Chapter 11 - The Voice Above Them.

Gabriel fired once at the hidden speaker.

The shot shattered plastic and killed Emily's recorded voice.

Norah flinched.

"What are you doing?"

"Removing distractions."

"That could have been live."

"It wasn't."

"How do you know?"

Gabriel pointed toward a small red playback light beneath the broken speaker housing.

"Because whoever is doing this still wants us frightened, not informed."

Luca swept his flashlight across the archive corridor.

"Movement at the far end."

A shadow crossed between storage cages.

Gabriel stepped in front of Norah.

"Stay here."

"I hate that sentence."

"Good. Remember it."

He and Luca advanced.

Norah remained beside the Meridian carton for exactly four seconds.

Then she noticed a thin strip of white paper protruding from beneath the box.

She crouched and pulled it free.

It was a handwritten inventory sheet.

Most entries were ordinary.

Contracts.

Bank records.

Photographs.

At the bottom, her father had written one separate line.

E.V. - ORIGINAL LEDGER - DO NOT STORE WITH G.K.

Norah stared at the initials.

E.V.

Emily Vale.

Footsteps sounded behind her.

She turned.

A woman stood at the edge of the emergency light.

Dark hair.

Black coat.

Thin silver bracelet.

Norah forgot how to breathe.

"Emily."

The woman took one step forward.

She was older.

Harder.

A pale scar ran beside her eyebrow exactly where it had when they were children.

But the eyes were the same.

"Hi, Nori."

Only Emily had called her that.

Norah's knees weakened.

"You're dead."

Emily's expression flickered.

"I know."

Norah crossed the distance before reason could stop her.

She grabbed Emily's shoulders.

Warm.

Real.

Alive.

"Six years," Norah whispered.

Emily's eyes filled.

"I didn't have a choice."

Norah shoved her backward.

"Everyone has a choice."

"Not when they tell you your sister dies if you come home."

Norah froze.

"Who?"

Emily glanced down the corridor.

"We don't have time."

"You have had six years."

"Norah, listen to me."

"Mom died believing you were in that house."

Emily's face twisted.

"Mom died because she found me."

Norah stared at her.

"What?"

"The fire wasn't meant to kill me."

"Then who was it meant for?"

Emily swallowed.

"You."

Gabriel's voice came from behind them.

"Step away from her."

Emily looked over Norah's shoulder.

Gabriel stood ten feet away with his handgun trained low but ready.

Luca covered the opposite angle.

Norah immediately moved between Gabriel and Emily.

"Don't."

Gabriel's eyes stayed on Emily.

"Move, Norah."

"No."

Emily gave a humorless laugh.

"Still collecting people who argue with you, Gabriel?"

Norah turned.

"You know him."

Emily's gaze never left Gabriel.

"I know what he was supposed to become."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

"And I know what you became."

Norah looked between them.

"Someone explain before I lose my mind."

Emily reached slowly into her coat.

Luca raised his weapon.

"Easy."

Emily removed a small brass cylinder and set it on the concrete floor.

"The original Meridian ledger is inside."

Norah stared.

"Why bring us here?"

"I didn't."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

"Then who did?"

Emily looked genuinely afraid for the first time.

"Samuel Creed."

Norah went cold.

"Dad's attorney."

"Dad's handler," Emily corrected.

The words landed hard.

Emily continued.

"Creed built Meridian before Dad ever audited it."

"He used legitimate companies to hide government theft, bribery, and contract manipulation."

"Dad found the system and tried to expose it."

"Gabriel helped him because Meridian had started using Kane companies without permission."

Gabriel's expression remained still.

Norah looked at him.

"You knew all this."

"Some of it."

"How much?"

"Enough to know your father died because he trusted the wrong lawyer."

Emily bent to retrieve the brass cylinder.

"Creed thought Dad had copied the master ledger."

"He was right."

"Dad gave it to me."

Norah's voice broke.

"You were seventeen."

"I was the one person Creed didn't think Dad would trust."

"And for thirteen years you've had it?"

Emily nodded.

"Why now?" Gabriel asked.

Emily looked at Norah.

"Because Meridian is moving again."

"The three million dollars wasn't stolen for profit."

"It was a test transfer."

Norah frowned.

"A test for what?"

Emily hesitated.

Then the entire archive shook with a deep mechanical boom.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Luca looked toward the elevator.

"That came from upstairs."

A second boom followed.

The steel fire door at the end of the corridor slammed shut automatically.

Gabriel grabbed Norah's hand.

"Move."

Emily caught Norah's other wrist.

"Not that way."

Gabriel looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because Creed doesn't want the ledger."

Emily's eyes shifted toward the ceiling.

"He wants everyone who can read it in one place."

Gabriel studied Emily in the dim archive light before anyone moved again.

"If you had the ledger, why keep leading Norah toward it?"

Emily's eyes flashed.

"I didn't lead her."

"Someone did using details from your life."

"Then someone has been inside mine too."

Norah looked between them.

"Stop talking around me."

Emily turned toward her.

"I had a storage room in Montreal compromised eight months ago."

"Creed's people took photographs, old letters, jewelry, everything personal enough to imitate me."

"Why were you in Montreal?"

"Following Meridian."

"Alone?"

Emily hesitated.

That hesitation was tiny.

Norah still saw it.

"Who helped you?"

"Someone inside the network."

Gabriel's voice turned flat.

"Name."

Emily shook her head.

"Not yet."

Gabriel took one step toward her.

Norah stepped between them again.

"Nobody is threatening anybody until I catch up on six years of lies."

Emily looked ashamed.

"Fair."

Norah pointed toward the brass cylinder.

"What exactly is in that ledger?"

"Enough to prove Meridian existed. Enough to show where money went. Enough to name some of the people who protected it."

"Some?"

"Dad compartmentalized everything. The microfilm is one layer."

Gabriel frowned.

"How many layers?"

Emily gave him a tired look.

"If I knew, I would have finished this years ago."

Norah felt anger rise again.

"You spent six years hunting this instead of telling me you were alive."

Emily's face hardened.

"I spent six years making sure the people who killed Dad didn't decide to finish with you."

"You don't get to call that protection without asking the person you protected."

Emily flinched.

Gabriel looked away, giving the sisters privacy despite standing six feet from them.

Norah's voice dropped.

"I needed you."

Emily looked at her.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

For a moment the archive, the guns, and the missing money disappeared.

There were only two sisters standing inside the consequences of decisions made when they were children.

Then Luca held up a hand.

"Listen."

A low hiss came from above.

Emily looked at the ceiling.

The vents had opened wider.

Gray vapor curled through the metal slats.

Gabriel immediately reached for Norah.

May you like

The ventilation system stopped.

A thin gray vapor began curling through the ceiling vents.
