Chapter 17 - The Trap Gabriel Chose.

Gabriel decided to go to Kane Tower anyway.
Norah stared at him for a full five seconds after he announced it.
"I am beginning to think your survival has been mostly luck."
"Very expensive luck."
"That is not better."
"Victor expects me."
"Which is why you should not go."
"Which is why he will reveal more if I do."
Norah folded her arms.
"You want to walk into the trap on purpose."
"Now you're getting it."
Luca looked between them.
"I hate when both of you make sense."
The plan formed quickly.
Gabriel would enter Kane Tower through the east garage exactly as Victor requested.
Luca would take a secondary team through the service loading area.
Norah would remain in a mobile command vehicle two blocks away.
Norah rejected the last part.
"I need access to the internal finance network."
"Remote access," Gabriel said.
"Victor can cut it."
"Then adapt."
"I am adapting by going inside."
"No."
"You don't own me."
Gabriel looked at her.
"I know."
The answer was so immediate that Norah lost the argument she had prepared.
He continued.
"That is why I am asking you not to walk into a building controlled by a man who has tried to manipulate you all night."
Norah's anger softened by one degree.
"You did not ask."
Gabriel paused.
"Please stay in the vehicle."
Luca turned his face toward the window.
Norah narrowed her eyes.
"Did that hurt?"
"Immensely."
"Good."
She agreed.
At 7:18 a.m., Gabriel entered Kane Tower alone through the east garage.
He carried no visible weapon.
The concealed handgun remained beneath his jacket.
Victor waited in the executive conference room on the thirty-eighth floor.
He looked exactly as he always had.
Gray suit.
Perfect tie.
Silver watch.
Calm expression.
That normality was the most disturbing thing about him.
"Gabriel."
"Victor."
They stood across the long table.
Victor gestured toward a chair.
"Sit."
Gabriel remained standing.
"You first."
Victor smiled faintly.
"You never did trust comfortable furniture."
"Furniture doesn't lie."
"People do."
"We agree on something."
In the command vehicle, Norah listened through Gabriel's hidden microphone.
Emily sat beside her with the microfilm reader photographs spread across a laptop.
Owen watched the street.
Luca's team moved through the loading dock.
Victor poured coffee.
"Do you know what your problem has always been?" he asked.
Gabriel watched him.
"People keep telling me."
"You mistake fear for loyalty."
"And you mistake patience for weakness."
Victor smiled again.
"There you are."
Norah studied his voice.
No panic.
No defensive rush.
He wanted this conversation.
Victor slid a folder across the table.
"Open it."
Gabriel did.
Inside were copies of Meridian ledgers showing Gabriel's signature on dozens of transfers.
"Forgeries," Gabriel said.
"Of course."
Gabriel looked up.
Victor did not pretend otherwise.
"You admit it."
"I admit the documents are forgeries."
"Mine?"
Victor took a slow sip of coffee.
"That's a more interesting question."
Norah whispered into the microphone.
"Push him on Rivergate."
Gabriel touched his cuff once to acknowledge.
"You knew we went to Rivergate."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"You took Norah there?"
The concern sounded real.
Norah hated that she could not tell.
Gabriel noticed too.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"You lied about an archive alert."
Victor set down the cup.
"Because I couldn't tell you how I really knew."
"Try me."
Victor leaned back.
"Emily Vale told me."
Inside the van, everyone turned toward Emily.
Emily went pale.
"He's lying."
Norah watched her sister.
"Is he?"
"Yes."
Victor continued through the microphone.
"Emily and I have been working together for eight months."
Norah's stomach dropped.
Gabriel remained expressionless.
"Working on what?"
"Destroying Samuel Creed."
Victor looked toward the window.
"My father."
Gabriel said nothing.
Victor laughed softly.
"Celeste finally told you."
"She did."
"Then she probably told you I inherited Meridian."
"Did you?"
Victor's eyes hardened.
"I inherited a disease."
In the van, Emily whispered,
"That part is true."
Norah turned toward her.
Emily closed her eyes.
"I did work with Victor."
Owen swore.
"You said Creed's office."
"Victor got me inside."
Norah stared at her sister.
"Eight months."
Emily nodded.
"He was trying to help."
"Was?"
Emily looked toward Gabriel's audio waveform on the screen.
"Until three weeks ago."
"What happened three weeks ago?"
Emily's face tightened.
Norah watched Emily after the confession.
Her sister had spent the entire night demanding honesty while rationing her own.
The hypocrisy hurt because Norah understood it.
Secrets became habits when survival rewarded them.
"Start from the beginning," Norah said.
Emily looked at the audio feed, then back at her.
"Eight months ago Victor contacted me through a dead mailbox Dad once used."
"How did he know about it?"
"Creed had Daniel's old legal files."
"And you trusted Victor?"
"No. I met him because I wanted to know what he knew."
Emily explained that Victor had claimed to be building a case against Samuel Creed from inside Meridian's surviving financial network.
He gave her names she could independently verify.
He provided access to a foundation account that linked Creed to offshore political money.
He even warned her about a surveillance team two days before they found her Montreal apartment.
For months, every piece of information he supplied proved accurate.
"That is how confidence schemes work," Norah said.
Emily nodded miserably.
"I know that now."
"What changed three weeks ago?"
"Victor found a scan of Dad's complete index. Not the ledger itself, but the map showing where each layer was hidden."
Norah's stomach tightened.
"Rivergate."
"One location. There were others."
"Where?"
Emily shook her head.
"Dad coded them. I haven't broken all of it."
"What did Victor do when he saw the index?"
"He stopped talking about exposing Creed. He started asking who would control Meridian if Creed disappeared."
Norah looked toward the speaker transmitting Victor's voice.
"He wanted to inherit it."
"I think he had always wanted that. I just finally heard it."
Owen leaned against the van wall.
"Why didn't you warn Gabriel?"
Emily laughed bitterly.
"Walk into Kane Tower and tell a man like Gabriel that his CFO is the secret son of a criminal architect and maybe rebuilding a decades-old financial conspiracy?"
Owen considered it.
"Fair."
Norah did not accept the excuse as easily.
"You could have warned me."
Emily looked at her.
"I was afraid Victor was watching you through Kane's systems."
"He was."
"Exactly."
Norah rubbed her forehead.
She was too tired to decide which betrayals deserved anger first.
The audio feed crackled.
Victor told Gabriel that Emily had worked with him for eight months.
Gabriel remained calm.
Norah imagined his face.
Stone stillness over violent calculation.
Emily reached for the microphone control.
"Let me tell him."
Norah stopped her.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because Victor wants us reacting. Let him believe Gabriel doesn't know what we know."
Emily studied her.
"You sound like Dad."
Norah's eyes stung unexpectedly.
"I barely remember his voice."
"You remember how he thought. That matters more."
Inside Kane Tower, Victor continued explaining that he had inherited a disease, not an empire.
Emily whispered,
"He used that line on me the first time we met."
Norah looked at her.
"Rehearsed vulnerability."
"Yes."
"What was the first thing he asked you for?"
Emily thought.
"Not the ledger. He asked whether Dad ever mentioned a contingency trustee."
Norah stared at her.
Victor had been hunting proof of his own inheritance before he knew where the ledger was.
That meant he had not simply discovered Meridian's succession mechanism.
Someone had told him it existed.
Samuel Creed.
Or Celeste.
Or Elena.
The audio speaker carried Victor's next words about finding the complete evidence.
Emily's face tightened.
Three weeks earlier, he had found exactly what he needed to stop pretending he wanted Meridian destroyed.
He had found the map to
"Victor found the full ledger."
Back in the conference room, Victor leaned toward Gabriel.
"You think I stole three million dollars."
"Didn't you?"
Victor smiled.
"No."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"Then who did?"
May you like
Victor looked directly at him.
"Norah."
