Chapter 12 - The Ledger.

Emily pulled a respirator from her coat and shoved it into Norah's hands.

"Put this on."

Norah stared at her.

"What about you?"

"I have one."

Gabriel ripped his shirt sleeve and tied the cloth across his mouth.

Luca did the same.

The gray vapor thickened near the ceiling.

"What is it?" Norah asked.

Emily fitted her own respirator.

"I don't know."

Gabriel gave her a hard look.

"You brought one mask to a place you didn't think was a trap?"

"I always carry one now."

"Normal habit."

"My life stopped being normal when I was seventeen."

Luca found an old maintenance schematic mounted behind a cabinet.

"Utility tunnel on the east wall."

They moved toward Storage 422.

The lock had rusted shut.

Gabriel fired twice into the mechanism.

The door kicked open.

Behind stacked crates, Luca found a narrow service hatch.

Emily entered first.

Norah followed.

Gabriel went behind her.

The tunnel smelled of dust and wet concrete.

They crawled twenty yards before the vapor disappeared behind them.

At the first junction, Emily stopped.

"We have maybe ten minutes before Creed's people find the secondary exit."

Gabriel held out his hand.

"Ledger."

Emily stared at him.

"No."

"You brought Norah into this."

"I was trying to keep her out."

"You photographed her."

"No."

"Someone using your face did."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"What photograph?"

Norah pulled out her phone and showed the bank footage.

Emily stared at it.

"That's not me."

Norah felt her stomach tighten.

"It has your scar."

"So does anyone with makeup and a good photograph."

"And your bracelet?"

Emily lifted her wrist.

The bracelet Norah had seen was there.

Emily unfastened it and handed it over.

Norah examined the charm.

A tiny scratch shaped like a crescent marked the back.

She remembered making that scratch with a kitchen knife when they were children.

The bracelet was real.

Emily watched her.

"I lost that bracelet eight months ago."

"Where?"

"Creed's office in Montreal."

Gabriel's face changed.

"You met him eight months ago?"

"I infiltrated one of his shell foundations."

"And you didn't kill him?"

"I needed the network, not the man."

Norah looked at Gabriel.

"See? Other people understand evidence."

"This is not the moment to enjoy that."

"I am taking what I can get."

Despite everything, Emily almost smiled.

For one heartbeat the sisters looked twelve and seventeen again.

Then Luca checked the tunnel behind them.

"Company."

Flashlights flickered far back in the passage.

Gabriel pointed forward.

"Move."

They reached an access chamber beneath an old pump station.

Emily opened the brass cylinder.

Inside was not a paper ledger.

It was a narrow roll of microfilm sealed in plastic.

Norah stared.

"Dad used microfilm?"

"Harder to alter remotely."

"He would have hated cloud storage."

Emily's mouth tightened with a sad smile.

"He did."

A metal ladder led to a street hatch.

Luca climbed first.

He pushed the cover open one inch.

Then immediately lowered it.

"Two vehicles outside."

Gabriel looked at Emily.

"Yours?"

"No."

The pursuing flashlights grew closer.

Norah examined the maintenance chamber.

An old pump control panel covered one wall.

A corroded water main ran beneath the floor.

"Can we flood the tunnel?"

Luca looked at her.

"You planning to drown us too?"

"The shutoff wheel is on our side."

Emily understood first.

"Open the emergency flush, then close this bulkhead."

Gabriel looked at Norah.

"You know municipal pump systems now?"

"I read contracts for a living."

"Remind me never to make fun of accountants again."

"You did that yesterday."

"I was younger."

Gabriel and Luca forced the rusted wheel open.

Water thundered into the lower passage.

Emily slammed the steel bulkhead as shouts erupted behind them.

The door locked.

Water hammered the other side.

For the first time in minutes, they had a barrier.

Luca tried the street hatch again.

One vehicle had moved.

"One car left."

Gabriel climbed beside him.

"Driver?"

"Can't see."

Norah looked at the microfilm.

"We need a reader."

Emily nodded.

"I know a place."

Gabriel gave her a suspicious look.

"Of course you do."

They emerged into a narrow waterfront alley one at a time.

The remaining black sedan sat thirty yards away.

Its headlights were off.

No one moved inside.

Gabriel raised his weapon.

The driver's door opened.

Owen Pike stepped out.

"Boss."

Gabriel did not lower his gun.

"How did you find us?"

Owen lifted both hands.

"Luca sent the location."

Luca frowned.

"No, I didn't."

Owen's face changed.

A red dot appeared on his chest.

Gabriel saw it first.

"Down!"

A suppressed shot cracked from a rooftop.

Owen collapsed behind the sedan.

Emily grabbed Norah and pulled her into cover.

Gabriel fired toward the rooftop muzzle flash.

Luca dragged Owen behind the engine block.

Owen was conscious.

The bullet had clipped his upper arm.

He looked at Gabriel through clenched teeth.

"Someone texted me from Luca's number."

Luca checked his phone.

No sent message.

Norah looked at Emily.

"They can clone voices, credentials, numbers, images."

Emily nodded.

"That's Meridian now."

Gabriel crouched beside the car.

"Then nobody trusts a screen again."

Emily looked at the microfilm in Norah's hand.

"Good."

"Because the ledger names the one person Meridian cannot fake."

Norah stared at her.

"Who?"

Emily answered with one word.

Once they reached the alley, Gabriel insisted on checking the microfilm cylinder himself before allowing anyone near the waiting vehicle.

Emily handed it over reluctantly.

He unscrewed both ends.

No tracker.

No transmitter.

No second compartment.

"Satisfied?" Emily asked.

"Temporarily."

Norah crouched beside Owen while Luca wrapped a pressure bandage around his arm.

Owen's face had gone gray.

"You're sure it just clipped you?" Norah asked.

"I have been shot before."

"That was not my question."

Owen almost smiled.

"Yes. Just clipped."

Gabriel looked at the rooftop where the shooter had disappeared.

"Why shoot Owen and not me?"

Luca answered while tying the bandage.

"Maybe bad angle."

Norah shook her head.

"No. The red dot sat on his chest long enough for us to see it."

Emily understood.

"Warning shot."

"Exactly. Whoever fired wanted us to know they could hit him."

Gabriel looked at Owen.

"Or wanted me to distrust him again."

Norah nodded.

The night's pattern continued.

Every violent act carried a second purpose.

Not just injury.

Suspicion.

Not just theft.

Direction.

Not just fear.

Isolation.

Norah looked at Gabriel.

"They're trying to make you stand alone."

"I usually do."

"That is exactly why it works."

Gabriel's expression tightened.

Emily watched them with quiet curiosity.

"He listens to you."

Norah almost laughed.

"No, he doesn't."

Gabriel answered at the same time.

"Sometimes."

Luca looked at Owen.

"We should all pretend we didn't hear that."

A car engine sounded at the end of the alley.

Everyone tensed.

A delivery van turned past without slowing.

The tension did not leave.

Emily looked at Norah.

"Once we read the ledger, there is no going back."

Norah glanced at the blood on Owen's bandage, the weapon in Gabriel's hand, and the abandoned Rivergate terminal behind them.

"I think we passed that exit several hours ago."

Emily nodded.

"Then you need to know something before we open it."

Gabriel looked at her.

Emily's expression became serious.

"Dad never wrote the leader's name in ordinary entries."

"He used one designation."

Norah asked,

"What designation?"

May you like

Emily looked at the microfilm cylinder.

"Founder."
