Chapter 18 - Why Claire Fell Asleep.

The sentence settled over the room with perfect clarity.
You should have stayed asleep.
Claire looked at Simon and finally stopped searching for an innocent explanation.
Adrian’s face became expressionless.
Elias took one step toward Simon.
Simon lifted the phone.
“Don’t.”
The screen showed a building control interface.
Daniel stared at it.
“He has the local security node.”
Simon looked almost relieved now that the performance was over.
“That is one way to describe it.”
Adrian kept his hands visible.
“Why?”
Simon laughed softly.
“You always ask the shortest question after the longest disaster.”
“Why?” Adrian repeated.
Simon looked at the Project Lantern files on the screen.
“Because your father built an empire and then left it to sons who wanted to feel morally superior to the machinery that created it.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Martin tried to dismantle it.”
“Yes.”
“You rebuilt it.”
“I improved it.”
Claire felt disgust rise in her throat.
“People’s private lives were leverage to you.”
Simon looked at her.
“People’s private lives are leverage to everyone.”
“Most people are simply too sentimental to admit it.”
Jonathan moved toward his daughter.
Simon tapped the phone.
The lights flashed.
Jonathan stopped.
Simon continued.
“Richard Vale understood that information moved markets before money did.”
“Charles understood the value but not the discipline.”
“He liked secrets because they made him feel important.”
“I liked systems because systems make power repeatable.”
Anna stared at him.
“So Charles financed you.”
Simon nodded.
“For a while.”
“Did he know what you were building?”
“Enough to be guilty.”
“Not enough to control it.”
Simon smiled.
“Exactly.”
Adrian looked at Elias.
“You installed the certificate on his tablet.”
Simon nodded.
“Through Charles.”
Elias swore under his breath.
Simon continued.
“I knew Martin was watching Meridian.”
“I needed him looking at Elias, Charles, anyone but me.”
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“And the night Martin died?”
For the first time, Simon’s expression changed.
Not regret.
Something closer to irritation.
“Martin was supposed to be delayed.”
Elias stepped forward.
“You sabotaged his car.”
Simon looked at him.
“I paid a contractor to make the vehicle unreliable.”
“I did not instruct anyone to kill him.”
Adrian’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“You expect that distinction to matter to me?”
“No.”
Simon met his eyes.
“I expect it to matter to a jury.”
Claire looked at Adrian before he could move.
“Don’t.”
Adrian looked at her.
She saw the anger in him, enormous and controlled only by choice.
“Martin built Lantern for this,” she said.
“Don’t give Simon a way to turn you into the story.”
Adrian breathed once.
Then stepped back.
Simon’s eyes narrowed at Claire.
“That is why you were always the real problem.”
Claire stared at him.
“You barely knew me.”
“I knew exactly who you were before Adrian hired you.”
The room went still.
Claire felt cold.
“How?”
Simon smiled.
“Martin left instructions with recruiting.”
Adrian frowned.
“What instructions?”
“An anonymous referral.”
Simon looked at Claire.
“Your résumé did not arrive by accident.”
Claire stared at the Lantern screen.
Simon continued.
“Martin wanted you inside Vale Holdings.”
“He wanted you near Adrian.”
Adrian looked at Claire.
Neither of them knew what to say.
Simon laughed quietly.
“The great romantic mystery.”
“Turns out your dead brother introduced you.”
Claire’s anger returned.
“You knew I was Rebecca Martin.”
“From your first day.”
“And you let me think I had fooled everyone.”
“It made you easier to watch.”
Claire remembered Simon greeting her politely in meetings.
Correcting her presentation once.
Bringing coffee during a late-night budget review.
Asking harmless questions about where she grew up.
All of it rearranged itself in her memory.
“The tea,” she said.
Simon’s smile faded.
Adrian looked at him.
“What tea?”
Claire spoke without looking away from Simon.
“You needed me asleep long enough to switch the capsule.”
Simon said nothing.
Adrian had known Simon longer than he had known almost anyone outside his family.
There were photographs of them at openings in three countries, funerals, fundraisers, and winter retreats.
Simon had stood beside him when Richard Vale died and beside Martin's empty chair after the crash.
None of that disappeared because Simon confessed.
That was what made the betrayal difficult to process.
Adrian did not suddenly discover that every good memory had been fake.
He discovered something worse.
A person could share real years with you and still decide that power mattered more when the choice finally arrived.
Claire squeezed Adrian's wrist once.
He did not look at her, but his breathing slowed.
She was protecting him now, and both of them knew it.
“That is why you knew Melissa left at eight.”
Still nothing.
“You intercepted the tray.”
Simon finally nodded once.
“I arranged for something mild to make you drowsy.”
Adrian moved before Claire could stop him.
He crossed half the room in one step.
Simon raised the phone.
The doors clicked and a security alarm screamed.
Claire caught Adrian’s arm.
“Adrian.”
He stopped.
Simon looked at him.
“I knew you would choose her over judgment.”
Adrian’s stare could have cut steel.
“No.”
He looked at Claire.
“I’m choosing her judgment over my anger.”
Claire felt something in her chest tighten.
Simon’s confidence slipped for half a second.
Daniel quietly moved his hand beneath the table toward the terminal cable.
Simon noticed.
“Don’t, Daniel.”
Daniel stopped.
Simon looked at Claire again.
“Open the final Lantern folder.”
She looked at the screen.
A directory remained locked.
FINAL AUTHORITY.
“No.”
Simon’s expression hardened.
“You will.”
“Why?”
“Because Martin hid the one thing I never found.”
“What?”
Simon’s gaze moved to the folder.
“The original leverage archive.”
Jonathan went pale.
Anna whispered, “He thinks Martin copied it.”
Simon smiled.
“I know he did.”
Claire looked at the locked folder.
Suddenly she understood the entire night.
Simon did not want the Black Ledger exposed.
He did not want Vale Holdings destroyed.
He wanted Martin’s map to the old archive.

And Martin had made Claire the only person who could open it.
