Chapter 5 - The Man Standing Closest.

No one spoke for several seconds.

The emergency light buzzed above Daniel’s head.

Claire looked at Simon.

Simon looked at the broken capsule in Adrian’s hand.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“This is ridiculous.”

Daniel’s voice was flat.

“Is it?”

Simon pointed at him.

“You appear out of nowhere during a building lockdown and expect us to believe you?”

Daniel shrugged.

“You don’t have to believe me.”

He looked at Adrian.

“You only have to survive long enough to verify it.”

Adrian stepped between the two men.

“Where is the real drive?”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“She had it when she entered the building.”

Claire touched the chain around her neck instinctively, then remembered the capsule was gone.

“I never took it off.”

Daniel’s eyes moved toward her hair.

“Did you sleep?”

Claire glanced at Adrian.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Maybe twenty minutes.”

Daniel looked at Simon.

Simon laughed without humor.

“So now I switched it while she was sleeping against Adrian?”

“No,” Claire said slowly.

“You never came near me.”

Simon spread his hands.

“Thank you.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“But Elias did.”

Adrian remembered Elias placing the photographs on the coffee table.

He had leaned directly over Claire while she slept.

Close enough to touch the chain without waking her.

Daniel frowned.

“Where is Elias?”

“Back in the office,” Adrian said.

Daniel shook his head.

“Then he’s gone.”

Adrian’s phone suddenly vibrated.

Signal had returned.

The seven-minute blackout was over.

He looked at the screen.

Sixteen missed calls from security.

Three from the chairman of Vale Holdings.

One text from an unknown number.

He opened it.

A photograph filled the screen.

Elias was standing inside Adrian’s private elevator.

He was smiling at the camera.

In his hand was a silver capsule.

Below the image was a message.

YOU HAVE THIRTY MINUTES TO GET REBECCA TO THE ROOF.

Claire read it over Adrian’s shoulder.

Her face went rigid.

Daniel cursed.

Simon looked at her.

“Rebecca?”

Claire ignored him.

Adrian reread the message.

“Why the roof?”

Daniel answered.

“Extraction.”

“Helicopter?”

“Most likely.”

Claire shook her head.

“My father doesn’t use helicopters in urban operations.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Then this isn’t your father’s extraction.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Claire looked at the photograph again.

“Elias wants us to think my father is behind this.”

Daniel nodded.

“Or he wants your father blamed after you disappear.”

Simon leaned against the wall.

“Can somebody explain why Claire is suddenly worth destroying an entire company over?”

Daniel looked at her.

Claire looked away.

Adrian noticed.

“There’s another secret.”

Claire’s silence answered him.

He took one step toward her.

“I am running out of patience with secrets.”

“I know.”

“Then stop giving me reasons to need it.”

Claire breathed in slowly.

“My father didn’t disappear because someone was hunting him.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Claire continued.

“He disappeared because of me.”

Simon stared.

Adrian said nothing.

“When I was eighteen, I found an archive inside Vantage.”

“What kind of archive?” Adrian asked.

“A leverage archive.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Claire looked at Adrian.

“Politicians, judges, executives, regulators, union leaders, journalists, police commanders.”

Simon whistled quietly.

“That’s a blackmail library.”

“My father called it insurance.”

Adrian understood immediately.

“And you copied it.”

Adrian looked at the countdown message and felt the shape of the trap more clearly.

Whoever designed it understood executives.

Threaten reputation, money, and public exposure at the same time, and most leaders would rush toward the one action that promised control.

Martin used to mock that instinct.

He called it expensive panic.

Adrian had ignored the phrase when they were younger.

Now he heard his brother's voice in it.

Claire watched him reading the message and seemed to recognize the same temptation.

If they moved too quickly, the attacker controlled them.

If they waited too long, the attacker controlled the consequences.

The only useful move was to stop treating the deadline as sacred.

Adrian decided then that no anonymous message would determine who he trusted.

“Yes.”

“What did you do with the copy?”

Claire’s face tightened.

“I hid it.”

“Where?”

“I never told anyone.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Rebecca.”

She looked at him.

“Martin found out, didn’t he?”

Claire nodded.

“He contacted me because someone was rebuilding the same kind of archive inside Vale Holdings.”

Adrian’s eyes darkened.

“Using my company.”

“Yes.”

“Using the Black Ledger.”

“Yes.”

Simon looked sick.

“That means Martin wasn’t auditing theft.”

Claire shook her head.

“He was auditing leverage.”

Daniel finished the thought.

“And someone killed him before he could identify who was building it.”

Adrian looked at Simon.

Then Daniel.

Then Claire.

A new message arrived.

Twenty-seven minutes.

The text beneath it read:

BRING THE GIRL OR THE LEDGER GOES PUBLIC.

Simon exhaled.

“That would bury this company.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“And destroy hundreds of people whose names are in those files.”

Claire nodded.

Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the caller ID and went completely still.

“Who is it?” Adrian asked.

Daniel turned the screen around.

The name displayed was MARTIN VALE.

Adrian stared at it.
