Chapter 4 - Claire Was Never Claire.

Adrian shut the stairwell door before the man outside could reach it.
The lock engaged with a metallic click.
Claire stood motionless on the landing.
Simon looked from her to the security badge in Adrian’s hand.
Elias was still trapped in the office on the other side of the door.
Adrian’s voice was low.
“Your name.”
Claire swallowed.
“Rebecca Martin.”
Simon shook his head.
“No.”
Claire ignored him.
“Claire Hayes is the name I’ve used for seven years.”
Adrian’s face revealed nothing.
“Why?”
“My father made enemies.”
“The man in my office?”
“Yes.”
“Who is he?”
“Jonathan Martin.”
Simon’s expression changed.
Adrian noticed.
“You know the name.”
Simon hesitated.
“Everyone in private intelligence knows the name.”
Claire looked at him sharply.
Simon continued.
“Jonathan Martin built Vantage Group.”
Adrian knew Vantage.
They were not a conventional security company.
They were the people corporations hired when problems had already moved beyond lawyers and public relations.
Vantage handled kidnappings, cyber theft, executive protection, quiet investigations, and the kind of negotiations never written into annual reports.
Adrian looked at Claire again.
“You’re the daughter of a man who runs a private intelligence network.”
“He doesn’t run it anymore.”
“What happened?”
“I left.”
“That was not my question.”
Claire’s eyes dropped.
“He disappeared three years ago.”
Adrian looked toward the door.
“He appears to have recovered.”
Footsteps stopped on the other side.
“Rebecca,” Jonathan called.
His voice was calm.
“I know you’re there.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Adrian held up one hand to keep everyone silent.
Jonathan continued.
“You need to come with me.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Claire whispered, “Don’t answer.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because he’ll know exactly where we’re standing.”
Simon frowned.
“He already knows we’re in the stairwell.”
“No,” Claire said.
“He knows I’m close.”
A faint electronic chirp sounded from the capsule around her neck.
Claire stared down at it.
Adrian understood first.
“Tracker.”
Claire tore the chain from her neck.
“I didn’t know.”
She dropped the capsule.
Adrian stepped on it hard.
The metal casing cracked.
A tiny green light died beneath his shoe.
Claire’s face twisted with anger.
“Daniel set me up.”
“Or protected you,” Simon said.
She looked at him.
“By putting a tracker on me?”
“If he expected something like tonight.”
Adrian listened to the silence outside the door.
Jonathan was no longer speaking.
That worried him more.
“What did Daniel tell you when he gave you the drive?” Adrian asked.
Claire forced herself to focus.
“He said Martin Vale contacted him one week before the crash.”
“My brother.”
“Yes.”
“He said Martin discovered someone was selling pieces of your company from the inside.”
Simon frowned.
“Selling what?”
“Information.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Client files?”
“Some.”
“Financial positions?”
“Yes.”
“Personal schedules?”
Claire hesitated.
“Yes.”
Simon cursed.
“That’s not corporate theft.”
“No,” Claire said.
“It’s preparation.”
“For what?” Adrian asked.
She looked at him.
“A takeover.”
The stairwell lights suddenly went out.
Total darkness swallowed them.
Claire felt Adrian’s hand close around her wrist.
“Stay with me.”
A metal scrape sounded one floor below.
Simon whispered, “Someone’s coming up.”
Another sound came from above.
Footsteps.
They were trapped between two groups.
Adrian pulled Claire toward the wall.
“How many people came with your father?”
“I don’t know.”
“That answer is getting old.”
“I haven’t seen him in three years.”
A beam of white light swept up the stairwell from below.
Simon grabbed Adrian’s sleeve.
“There’s a service landing on forty-one.”
Claire remembered the building plans.
“Maintenance corridor.”
Adrian nodded.
They moved down one flight.
The footsteps above accelerated.
At forty-one, Simon found the service door and pushed it open.
Claire had spent seven years building the name Claire Hayes carefully enough that sometimes even she forgot it had begun as camouflage.
The name belonged to a girl who could rent an apartment without attracting attention, apply for jobs without triggering old security databases, and walk into a coffee shop without wondering who had searched her family first.
Rebecca Martin belonged to locked rooms, coded conversations, and parents who believed disappearing could be an act of love.
Adrian had met Claire.
He had never met Rebecca.
The thought frightened her more than the footsteps in the stairwell.
She did not know whether the man holding her wrist would see the two names as one person or as proof that everything between them had been manufactured.
She hated that there was no time to find out gently.
They slipped into a narrow maintenance corridor packed with pipes and electrical cabinets.
Claire shut the door behind them.
A hand grabbed the handle from the stairwell side one second later.
Adrian pulled her away.
“Run.”
They hurried through the corridor.
At the far end, Simon stopped at another locked panel.
“This leads to the south elevator bank.”
Claire turned back.
The maintenance door shuddered under a heavy impact.
Adrian looked at Simon.
“Open it.”
“I need power.”
“Then find another way.”
Simon pulled the front plate off the panel.
Claire crouched beside him.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“My father taught me security systems before he taught me to drive.”
Simon stared.
“That would have been useful to know six months ago.”
Claire crossed two low-voltage contacts using the metal edge of the broken security badge.
The lock clicked.
They pushed through.
A dim corridor opened ahead.
Someone was already waiting there.
Daniel Mercer stood beneath an emergency light.
The man from the parking garage held both hands where they could see them.
“Finally,” he said.
Claire stepped forward.
“You tracked me.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What?”
“The drive had a tracker.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“No, it didn’t.”
Claire stared at him.
Adrian lifted the broken capsule.
Daniel took one look and went pale.
“That isn’t the drive I gave you.”
Claire’s pulse jumped.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel pointed at the cracked metal casing.
“The one I gave you was silver.”
Claire looked down.
The capsule was black.
Adrian’s eyes turned toward Simon.
Simon slowly stepped back.
Claire felt the truth arrive before anyone said it.
May you like
Someone had switched the drive while she slept.
