Chapter 1 - The Camera Never Blinked

The security footage ended, but nobody in the mansion foyer moved.

Emily could still feel the sting of Vanessa’s palm burning across her cheek.

The diamond necklace remained inside the brown leather handbag on the marble floor.

Only now, it no longer looked like evidence against Emily.

It looked like evidence against Vanessa.

Daniel stood in front of the security monitor with his shoulders rigid.

He replayed the footage.

Vanessa appeared on the screen again.

She looked over her shoulder.

She opened Emily’s handbag.

She slipped the necklace inside.

Then she walked away.

There was no misunderstanding.

There was no possible explanation that could make the act innocent.

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“You framed her.”

Vanessa’s face had lost all color.

“I can explain.”

“Then explain.”

Margaret stood beside the staircase with one hand gripping the railing.

Her eyes moved from Vanessa to Emily.

Something strange crossed her face.

It was not merely shock.

It looked like recognition.

Emily noticed it immediately.

Vanessa did too.

“I thought she took something before.”

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“I panicked.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You calmly planted a necklace in her bag and then slapped her in front of everyone.”

“I made a mistake.”

Emily finally lowered her hand from her cheek.

“No.”

Every face turned toward her.

Her voice was quiet.

“You didn’t make a mistake.”

Vanessa stared at her.

Emily swallowed the anger gathering in her throat.

“You chose my bag.”

“You waited until I wasn’t there.”

“You knew exactly what you were doing.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

For half a second, the frightened woman disappeared.

Something colder appeared underneath.

Then Margaret suddenly spoke.

“What is your full name?”

Emily looked at her.

“Emily Parker.”

Margaret’s fingers tightened around the railing.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Daniel noticed.

“Why does that name matter?”

Margaret said nothing.

Emily felt the atmosphere change again.

She had worked inside the Hawthorne mansion for only six weeks.

Until that moment, she had believed Vanessa hated her because she was poor.

Because she wore a housekeeping uniform.

Because people like Vanessa sometimes enjoyed humiliating people who could not fight back.

But Margaret’s reaction told her something else.

Vanessa had not selected a random employee.

She had selected Emily Parker.

Daniel stepped closer to his mother.

“Mom.”

Margaret’s voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Who was your mother?”

Emily hesitated.

“Laura Parker.”

A glass slipped from Margaret’s hand.

It shattered across the marble floor.

Vanessa immediately backed away.

Margaret stared at Emily as though a ghost had walked into her home.

Daniel looked between them.

“Who is Laura Parker?”

May you like

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa turned and ran upstairs.
