Chapter 18 - The Fall of Vanessa Cole

Vanessa pointed the pistol at Daniel.
Emily saw her finger tighten.
“Don’t.”
Daniel did not move.
“Vanessa.”
“You were supposed to marry me.”
“I was.”
“You promised.”
“Before I knew what you had done.”
Vanessa laughed through tears.
“So one maid walks into this house and suddenly I’m nothing?”
Emily flinched at the word.
Daniel’s face became cold.
“This was never about Emily taking something from you.”
“You stole from this family.”
“You tried to murder Peter.”
“You framed an innocent woman.”
“You shot at her.”
“And you are still blaming everyone else.”
Vanessa’s hand trembled violently.
Police voices echoed outside.
Michael had been arrested near the tunnel exit.
There was nowhere left to run.
Emily slowly placed Laura’s statement on the altar.
“Your father spent his life making other people pay for his choices.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t have to finish the same way.”
For several seconds, nothing moved.
Then Vanessa looked down at the weapon.
Daniel took one slow step forward.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Stay away.”
Another step.
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
Vanessa’s eyes moved between him and Emily.
Then she whispered.
“I hated her before I ever met her.”
Emily felt the words strike deeper than expected.
Vanessa continued.
“Her name was inside every secret my father left behind.”
“Laura Parker.”
“Laura Parker.”
“Laura Parker.”
“She became the ghost that could take everything from me.”
Emily answered quietly.
“And you turned her daughter into your enemy.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
The gun lowered.
Detective Reed entered behind Daniel.
“Put it on the floor.”
Vanessa opened her eyes.
She looked at Emily one last time.
The hatred was gone.
So was the confidence.
Only exhaustion remained.
She placed the pistol on the stone floor.
Reed moved forward.
Handcuffs closed around her wrists.
As officers led Vanessa from the chapel, she stopped beside Emily.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily looked at her.
She remembered the slap.
The accusation.
Her mother’s ruined name.
The burning archive.
The gunshot.
“Maybe one day that will mean something.”
May you like
Vanessa lowered her gaze.
Then she was taken away.
