Chapter 10 - The Room That Was Never Empty

Margaret led them to the third floor.

At the end of the east hallway stood a bedroom that had remained locked for years.

Daniel looked confused.

“That was Aunt Catherine’s room.”

Margaret shook her head.

“Before Catherine moved in, it belonged to Laura.”

Emily stopped walking.

“My mother lived here?”

“For almost a year.”

Margaret unlocked the door.

Dust covered the furniture.

White sheets draped over the bed and chairs.

Emily entered slowly.

A faint scent of cedar lingered in the room.

Her mother had slept here.

Her mother had looked through these windows.

For the first time, Laura’s life at Hawthorne mansion felt real.

Margaret approached an old writing desk.

“She used to hide cash beneath the bottom drawer.”

Emily removed the drawer.

Nothing.

Daniel crouched beside her.

“There’s space underneath.”

He pressed against the wood.

A false panel lifted.

Inside was a small notebook wrapped in fabric.

The ledger.

Emily opened it.

Dates.

Account numbers.

Initials.

Amounts.

Names of shell companies.

Victor Hale’s name appeared repeatedly.

So did Richard Hawthorne’s.

Daniel went silent.

Margaret sat down.

Emily turned the pages.

One entry had been circled.

Payment approved after L.P. removal.

Another note appeared beneath it.

V.H. says R.H. will handle wife.

Margaret read it twice.

Then she began to cry.

“My husband knew.”

Daniel stared out the window.

Emily felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Her mother had been telling the truth.

But proving Laura innocent meant destroying the public memory of Daniel’s father.

Detective Reed photographed every page.

“This is enough to reopen the investigation.”

Then Daniel pointed toward the final page.

“Wait.”

A payment dated sixteen years later appeared.

Victor had already been dead by then.

Yet the same offshore account had received another transfer.

The initials beside it were V.C.

Emily’s pulse quickened.

“Vanessa Cole.”

Daniel nodded.

Vanessa had continued whatever her father had started.

Reed looked toward Margaret.

“What did Vanessa have access to?”

Margaret’s expression changed.

“The Hawthorne family trust.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“She manages the charity foundation.”

Margaret stood.

“And tomorrow morning, she is scheduled to receive permanent signing authority.”

Emily finally understood.

Vanessa had not framed her only because of the past.

She had framed Emily because Emily had arrived just before Vanessa gained control of millions.
