Chapter 1 - The Silence After the Lie

The frozen image of Vanessa slipping the necklace into Emily’s handbag remained on the enormous screen.
No one moved.
No one whispered.
The guests who had stared at Emily with suspicion only moments earlier suddenly found the marble floor fascinating.
Vanessa stood beneath the chandelier with one hand trembling beside her black dress.
Daniel slowly turned away from the screen.
His face no longer showed shock.
It showed something colder.
Disgust.
“You slapped an innocent woman.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Daniel, please.”
“You accused her of stealing from my mother.”
“I can explain.”
“Then explain it.”
Vanessa looked around the foyer.
Dozens of people were watching her.
Some had already taken out their phones.
Her confidence had disappeared so completely that Emily almost did not recognize her.
“It was a mistake.”
Emily stared at her.
“A mistake?”
Her voice was quiet.
That somehow made the words more powerful.
“You put the necklace inside my bag.”
Vanessa’s lips tightened.
Emily lowered her hand from her swollen cheek.
“You called me a thief.”
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
“I was upset.”
Emily gave a small, broken laugh.
“You hit me because you were upset?”
Margaret finally stepped forward.
The older woman had been silent since the footage began.
The necklace belonged to her.
But her eyes were not on the diamonds.
They were on Emily.
“Emily.”
Margaret’s voice trembled.
Emily turned.
Margaret looked ashamed.
“I believed her.”
Emily said nothing.
“I saw the necklace in your bag, and I believed her.”
“That is what she wanted.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Daniel walked toward Vanessa.
His voice dropped.
“Why?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Why would you do this?”
“I already told you.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You told me it was a mistake.”
He pointed toward the screen.
“That was not a mistake.”
The footage showed Vanessa checking the hallway before planting the necklace.
It showed planning.
It showed intention.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You waited until Emily’s bag was unattended.”
Vanessa remained silent.
“You stole my mother’s necklace.”
Still nothing.
“You planted it.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“You accused Emily publicly.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“And then you hit her.”
“I lost control.”
“No.”
Emily’s voice interrupted them.
Everyone turned.
Emily looked directly at Vanessa.
“You didn’t lose control.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
Emily continued.
“You knew exactly what you were doing.”
For the first time, fear appeared behind Vanessa’s anger.
Emily noticed it.
So did Daniel.
Daniel turned toward Emily.
“What do you mean?”
Emily hesitated.
She had kept something secret for almost two weeks.
She had convinced herself that it was none of her business.
She had told herself she was only an employee.
But after what Vanessa had done, remaining silent suddenly felt dangerous.
Emily looked toward the second-floor hallway.
“There’s something I never told you.”
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
“Emily.”
Her warning came too quickly.
Daniel heard it.
He looked between them.
“What didn’t you tell me?”
Emily took a slow breath.
“Three nights ago, I saw Vanessa coming out of your private study.”
Daniel frowned.
“That study is locked.”
“I know.”
Emily looked directly at him.
“And you were in Chicago.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“She’s lying again.”
Daniel raised one hand.
Vanessa stopped.
Emily continued.
“She was carrying a folder.”
Daniel’s expression sharpened.
“What folder?”
“A blue leather folder with your company logo.”
Margaret inhaled sharply.
Daniel went completely still.
There was only one blue leather folder in his study.
It contained confidential documents involving the family trust.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Her face had turned pale again.
“Where is that folder?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel repeated the question.
“Where is it?”
May you like
Vanessa backed away.
Then every light in the mansion suddenly went dark.
