Chapter 14 - Vanessa’s Last Escape
For the first time since the necklace accusation, Vanessa seemed beyond Daniel’s reach.
Her photograph appeared on national law-enforcement systems.
Border authorities confirmed she had entered Canada using a legitimate passport six hours earlier.
Daniel paced his study.
“She planned everything.”
Grant nodded.
“Probably before the engagement party.”
Emily sat near the fireplace.
Her mother had returned home under police protection.
Evelyn and Marcus were in custody.
Adrian Vale remained missing.
Vanessa had escaped.

Emily looked at Grant.
“Can they clear my father’s name?”
Grant nodded.
“Yes.”

“For certain?”
“The evidence is overwhelming.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
For seventeen years, Robert Carter had been remembered publicly as the man who stole from the Hawthorne family.
That story was finally dying.
Daniel approached Emily.
“My company will issue a statement.”
Emily shook her head.
“Not yet.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa is still out there.”
“She can’t change the evidence.”
“No.”
Emily looked toward the window.
“But she can change the story.”
Grant agreed.
“She may claim she’s being targeted by Daniel.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“She framed a housekeeper on camera.”
“People have survived worse scandals with good lawyers.”
Daniel understood.
Within hours, Vanessa proved Grant right.
A video appeared online.
She sat in an anonymous hotel room.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were filled with convincing tears.
“I made a terrible mistake at the party.”
She admitted planting the necklace.
But then she changed direction.
“I did it because I was terrified.”
Emily stared at the screen.
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel Hawthorne had become controlling.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“He threatened me repeatedly.”
Margaret whispered.
“She’s lying.”
Vanessa claimed Daniel manipulated the footage.
She claimed financial accusations against her family were revenge.
Then she mentioned Emily.
“Emily Carter has been used by Daniel to support a false narrative.”
Emily almost laughed.
Vanessa was now pretending to protect the woman she had slapped.
The video spread quickly.

Daniel’s company stock fell.

“What?”
“People believe the first story that looks convincing.”
She pointed toward the black television screen.
“So we don’t give them a story.”
Daniel waited.
“We give them evidence.”
The next morning, Daniel held a press conference.
But he did not stand alone.
Emily walked beside him.
Reporters shouted questions.
Cameras flashed.
Daniel began.
“Yesterday, an innocent employee was falsely accused of theft in my home.”
He stepped away from the microphone.
Emily took his place.
She looked into the cameras.
“My name is Emily Carter.”
Her voice remained steady.
“Seventeen years ago, my father was accused of something he did not do.”
