Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Her name was Evelyn Vale.
Grant found the records before sunrise.
Vanessa had told Daniel that Evelyn died from cancer twenty years ago.
The story was false.
Evelyn Vale had changed her name.
She had been living in Arizona for more than a decade.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“So Vanessa lied about her mother too.”
Grant nodded.
“And Evelyn has financial connections to Calder.”
Emily felt the pattern becoming clearer.
Victor had created the original theft system.
Evelyn helped move money.
Years later, their children revived the operation.
Daniel walked to the window.
“They weren’t stealing randomly.”
Emily looked at him.
“They targeted your family.”
“Yes.”
Margaret spoke quietly.
“For revenge?”
Grant shook his head.
“Maybe.”
He opened another record.
“But mostly for money.”
Investigators located Evelyn’s recent travel history.
Two days earlier, she had flown into the city.
Emily’s pulse quickened.
“She’s here?”
Grant nodded.
Daniel turned.
“Find her.”
Police began searching hotels, rental properties, and addresses connected to the Vale family.
Meanwhile, the old VHS tape was professionally copied.
The footage clearly showed Evelyn receiving documents from Victor.
Another section revealed something even more important.
Robert Carter entered the hallway ten minutes later.
He saw Evelyn.
He photographed her vehicle.
He then entered Charles Hawthorne’s office.
The tape proved Robert had been investigating the theft.
It also proved he had not stolen the money.
Emily watched the footage twice.
The second time hurt more.
Her father looked nervous.
But determined.
Susan held Emily’s hand.
“He knew he was in danger.”
Emily whispered.
“And he still kept going.”
Grant’s phone rang.
He listened.
Then looked toward Daniel.
“They found Evelyn.”
Everyone stood.
“Where?”
“An apartment near the river.”
Daniel grabbed his coat.
Grant stopped him.
“Police are already there.”
Another call came five minutes later.
The apartment was empty.
But investigators found luggage.
Burner phones.
Cash.
And the missing heart pendant.
Emily stared at the evidence photograph.
“They had it.”
Grant nodded.
“They opened the pendant.”
“Did they find anything?”
“Apparently not.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why steal it?”
Emily suddenly understood.
“They thought the evidence was inside the heart.”
Grant nodded.
“But Robert hid the key in the old chain.”
Susan gave a small, emotional laugh.
“He always said the safest hiding place was inside something people thought they understood.”
Daniel looked toward Emily.
“Your father outsmarted them.”
“For seventeen years.”
A police officer entered with additional evidence.
One burner phone contained messages between Evelyn and Vanessa.
Grant read them.
The final messages were from the previous night.
MOTHER: THE GIRL FOUND THE CARD.
VANESSA: I KNOW.
MOTHER: GET THE DRIVE AND LEAVE.
VANESSA: DANIEL SHOWED THE FOOTAGE.
MOTHER: THEN WE USE ROBERT.
Emily felt sick.
“Use Robert how?”
Grant scrolled further.
The next message answered.
MOTHER: IF EMILY LEARNS WHAT HAPPENED TO HER FATHER, SHE’LL FOLLOW THE TRAIL FOR US.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
Emily stared at the words.
“They wanted me to find the evidence.”
Grant nodded slowly.
“Apparently.”
“Why?”
Another message appeared.
MOTHER: ROBERT HID SOMETHING VICTOR NEVER FOUND.
THE GIRL WILL LEAD US TO IT.
Emily looked toward the recovered documents.
“They were watching us.”
Daniel went still.
Grant understood at the same moment.
“If Emily led them to locker 42…”
He turned toward the station entrance.
“They know exactly where we are.”
