Chapter 11 - The Man Behind Julian.

They descended beneath the hotel.

The polished luxury disappeared.

Concrete walls replaced marble.

Bare bulbs replaced chandeliers.

Claire counted three basement levels.

Then four.

Sloane stared at the numbers painted on the walls.

“I grew up in this building.”

Rebecca kept moving.

“You grew up above it.”

They reached a steel door.

A keypad blinked red.

Rebecca typed six numbers.

The door unlocked.

Nathan looked at her.

“You remember the code after eight years?”

Rebecca stared at Julian’s initials scratched beside the frame.

“I remember everything.”

Inside was a corridor lined with metal cages.

Old hotel records filled shelves.

Boxes were labeled by year.

Claire realized the laundering system had existed longer than she had been alive.

Anne leaned against her.

“Harrison’s father.”

Sloane heard.

“My grandfather started this?”

Anne nodded.

“He built the empire twice.”

“Once with hotels.”

“And once underneath them.”

They reached another door.

Voices sounded beyond it.

Julian.

Victor.

Claire stopped.

Rebecca held one finger to her lips.

They listened.

“You promised she would never find out.”

Julian’s voice shook.

Victor answered calmly.

“You were the one who married her.”

“Harrison ordered surveillance.”

“Surveillance is not marriage.”

“I needed access to the trust.”

“And now everyone knows.”

Claire looked at Anne.

Her mother squeezed her hand.

Victor continued.

“Burn the ledgers.”

Julian answered.

“And Claire?”

Silence.

Claire’s blood froze.

Victor finally spoke.

“She was legally dead once.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Nathan reached for the door.

Claire stopped him.

She removed her phone.

No signal.

Sloane looked at her own.

Nothing.

Rebecca whispered.

“The basement blocks reception.”

Claire looked around.

“Cameras?”

Rebecca pointed toward an old security console.

Nathan moved to it.

The system was connected by cable.

“No external internet.”

Sloane looked at the sprinkler pipe above them.

“What about the hotel emergency network?”

Nathan understood.

“Hardwired.”

He opened the console panel.

Rebecca smiled.

“My brother learned something.”

Nathan pulled an Ethernet cable.

“Give me your phone.”

Sloane handed it over.

Nathan connected a small adapter from his keychain.

Claire almost laughed.

“You carry that?”

“I work security.”

The phone found a wired network.

One bar became full signal.

Claire immediately sent the files from the USB to herself.

Then to three addresses.

Her attorney from years earlier.

A local investigative reporter.

And the state attorney general’s public fraud inbox.

She pressed send.

The progress bar moved.

12 percent.

Julian’s voice sounded closer.

Claire looked at the door.

38 percent.

Metal scraped.

Victor was moving boxes.

61 percent.

Rebecca held her breath.

83 percent.

The door handle turned.

97 percent.

Claire stared at the screen.

100 percent.

SENT.

The door opened.

Julian stood there.

His eyes immediately dropped to the phone.

He understood.

Claire smiled.

May you like

“You’re too late.”

Julian lunged toward her.
