Chapter 8 - A Fortune Built on a Funeral.

Nathan crossed the ballroom.

He grabbed Harrison by the collar.

“What happened to my sister?”

Harrison did not resist.

“I never touched Rebecca.”

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

Nathan shoved him backward.

“You knew her name.”

Harrison looked toward the screen.

“She discovered transactions tied to our private accounts.”

Claire stared at the photograph.

Rebecca looked barely twenty-five.

Nathan’s hands shook.

“She disappeared three days after telling me she had found something strange at work.”

Harrison’s face hardened.

“I paid her to leave.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

“Two million dollars.”

Nathan laughed in disbelief.

“My mother died believing Rebecca was dead.”

“She agreed to disappear.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

Harrison looked toward Julian.

“Ask him.”

Nathan turned.

Julian smiled.

“I never met her.”

Harrison’s eyes sharpened.

“Another lie.”

Claire understood.

Julian had been involved years before their marriage.

Before he claimed Harrison hired him.

“How long have you worked for him?”

Julian said nothing.

Claire stepped closer.

“How long?”

“Seven years.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

They had met five years ago.

Their entire marriage had happened inside Julian’s criminal life.

Sloane looked toward her father.

“Why were you moving money through fake accounts?”

Harrison lowered his head.

“Your grandfather started it.”

The ballroom became quiet.

Harrison spoke without looking at anyone.

“Ashford Hotels nearly collapsed during the recession.”

“He borrowed money from people who could not appear on financial statements.”

“Criminal organizations?”

Sloane asked.

Harrison nodded once.

“When the company recovered, they wanted more than repayment.”

Claire looked at the USB.

“Money laundering.”

“Yes.”

“For decades?”

“Yes.”

Sloane sat slowly on the edge of the stage.

Harrison continued.

“I spent years trying to separate the company from them.”

Julian laughed.

“You spent years pretending.”

Harrison looked at him.

“I hired specialists.”

“You hired criminals.”

“I hired you because you understood how they moved money.”

Claire interrupted.

“And me?”

Harrison looked at her.

“You were never supposed to know any of this.”

“Why did you create a trust?”

His face tightened.

“Because you were my daughter.”

Claire almost slapped him.

“You watched me lose my home.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You watched my mother disappear.”

“That was necessary.”

“You knew Julian married me.”

Harrison hesitated.

That pause destroyed whatever defense he had left.

Claire stepped backward.

“So you knew.”

“I knew he became close to you.”

“You approved it.”

“No.”

“You allowed it.”

Harrison said nothing.

Claire looked down at the wedding ring around her neck.

Every memory felt contaminated.

Julian finally spoke.

“The trust was worth eighty-four million dollars.”

Sloane looked up.

Claire stared at him.

Julian smiled sadly.

“That’s why I staged my death.”

Harrison’s eyes narrowed.

Julian continued.

“Under the trust terms, if Claire became widowed and financially distressed, emergency control transferred to her designated spouse representative.”

Claire whispered.

“You.”

“For ninety days.”

“You stole it.”

“Most of it.”

Harrison stepped toward him.

Julian backed away.

Then the ballroom doors suddenly unlocked.

Julian smiled.

“Right on time.”

The doors opened.

Men in dark suits entered.

They were not hotel security.

They carried no visible badges.

Harrison went still.

The oldest man among them looked at Claire.

Then at the USB hidden beneath her hand.

“We’re going to need that drive.”
