Chapter 12 - The Black Ledger.

Nathan intercepted Julian.

They crashed into the shelves.

Boxes exploded across the floor.

Victor appeared behind Julian.

His men raised weapons.

Sloane stepped in front of Anne.

Rebecca grabbed Claire.

“Back.”

Victor stared at Claire’s phone.

“What did you send?”

“Everything.”

“That drive contains encrypted fragments.”

Claire smiled.

“Then I hope reporters enjoy puzzles.”

Victor’s face hardened.

Julian struggled beneath Nathan.

“Claire, stop.”

She looked at him.

“I already stopped.”

Nathan slammed Julian against the wall.

Rebecca moved toward a locked cabinet.

She entered another code.

The door opened.

Inside sat a single black ledger.

Victor’s composure vanished.

“No.”

Rebecca grabbed it.

Victor’s men moved.

Harrison’s voice suddenly echoed from the corridor.

“Put the weapons down.”

Everyone turned.

Harrison stood beside four uniformed police officers.

Behind them were federal agents.

Sloane stared.

“You called them?”

Harrison looked at Claire.

“She did.”

Claire realized her emails had triggered something bigger than she expected.

One federal agent stepped forward.

“Victor Dane.”

Victor looked almost bored again.

“You don’t have jurisdiction over whatever fantasy this family is creating.”

The agent held up his phone.

“We have bank records transmitted from inside this building.”

Rebecca lifted the ledger.

“And now you have this.”

Victor moved toward her.

An agent stepped between them.

“Don’t.”

Rebecca handed over the black book.

The agent opened it.

Rows of handwritten transactions filled the pages.

Dates.

Account numbers.

Initials.

Political donations.

Construction contracts.

Payments.

And names.

Claire saw Julian Cross written repeatedly.

She also saw Harrison Ashford.

Sloane did too.

“Dad.”

Harrison closed his eyes.

The agents separated everyone.

Nathan released Julian.

Julian immediately looked toward Claire.

“Tell them I helped you.”

Claire stared.

“You what?”

“I brought you to the truth.”

“You tried to stop me.”

“I warned you.”

“You destroyed my life.”

Julian stepped closer until an agent blocked him.

“I kept you alive.”

Claire laughed.

“You expect credit?”

Victor watched silently.

Julian’s desperation increased.

“Claire, Harrison wanted you controlled.”

Harrison looked at him.

“That is not what I said.”

“You hired me.”

“To verify her safety.”

“You gave me access.”

“To financial records.”

“You told me the trust existed.”

Harrison’s silence answered enough.

Sloane turned away from her father.

Claire looked at Harrison.

“You set a stranger near me because you were too cowardly to tell me who you were.”

“Yes.”

Claire had not expected the admission.

Harrison looked older.

“I thought money could protect you without requiring me to become part of your life.”

“It didn’t protect me.”

“No.”

“It made me a target.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at Anne.

Her mother had lost decades.

Rebecca had lost eight years.

Nathan had lost a sister.

Sloane had almost married a man who stole from Claire.

Entire lives had been treated as numbers on a ledger.

The federal agent closed the book.

“Nobody leaves.”

Then the lights suddenly went out.

A shot cracked through the basement.

Someone screamed.

When the emergency light came on, Victor Dane was gone.

And Anne was no longer beside the cart.
