Chapter 10 - The Call From the Dead.

Thomas did not enter the room.

He simply stood in the doorway as if he had arrived to confirm a reservation.

Mara moved between him and the table.

"This is a privileged meeting."

Thomas smiled faintly.

"Then you should close the door next time."

Marcus picked up the brass key.

Thomas watched the movement.

"Adrian's little insurance policy," he said.

Caroline studied him.

"You emptied Daniel Price's safe-deposit box."

Thomas did not deny it.

"Daniel's estate had unresolved corporate property."

"You used Adrian's signature."

"I used an authorization presented to me as valid."

Mara laughed once.

"You want to try that sentence under oath?"

Thomas looked at her.

"Gladly."

Caroline stepped closer.

"What was in the red folder?"

Thomas's expression did not change.

"Ask Evelyn."

"I'm asking you."

"Then you're asking the wrong person."

"You carried it out of the bank yesterday."

For the first time, something shifted behind his eyes.

"You saw the footage."

"Yes."

Thomas glanced at Marcus.

"You brought her there anyway."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"I told her not to go."

Thomas smiled.

"You always were bad at controlling people."

"Unlike you?"

"I prefer incentives."

Mara stepped toward the hall.

"We're done."

Thomas moved aside.

"Of course."

As Caroline passed him, he spoke softly enough that only she could hear.

"Ask your son why Adrian took him to Connecticut the week before the crash."

Caroline stopped.

Thomas continued walking.

She turned.

"What did you say?"

He did not look back.

"Ask Noah."

The board meeting resumed without him.

Thomas's affidavit remained on the record, but his credibility had begun to crack.

Mara introduced evidence of the bank access.

Marcus's share transfer was independently verified.

The motion to suspend Caroline's proxy failed by one vote.

Evelyn sat perfectly still through the result.

Caroline expected anger.

Instead, Evelyn looked relieved.

That unsettled her.

After the meeting, Caroline waited near the boardroom windows until Evelyn approached.

"You wanted me to keep the proxy," Caroline said.

Evelyn stopped.

"Don't flatter yourself."

"You could have challenged Marcus's transfer earlier."

"I did."

"Not effectively."

"What are you suggesting?"

"That you needed the vote to fail."

Evelyn's eyes moved toward the city.

"You are beginning to understand the size of the room you're in."

"Then help me understand it."

"No."

"Thomas is coming for Orchid."

Evelyn looked at Caroline sharply.

That was confirmation enough.

"He already has the red folder," Caroline said.

"You don't know what he has."

"You sound afraid."

Evelyn touched her emerald ring.

Noah's observation flashed through Caroline's mind.

Dad said you touched your ring when you lied.

Caroline watched the movement.

"What did Adrian put in Connecticut?"

Evelyn's hand froze.

"Nothing."

The ring again.

Caroline almost smiled.

"Thank you."

She turned away.

Evelyn caught her arm.

Caroline looked down at the hand.

Evelyn released her immediately.

"If you go to that house," Evelyn said, "do not take Noah."

"Why?"

"Because Adrian made choices there that he regretted."

"What choices?"

"Ask the dead."

Caroline stared at her.

"I have been trying."

After the board meeting, Caroline spent an hour in a borrowed office with Dana Cho on a secure video call.

Dana had not yet been appointed examiner, but Mara trusted her enough to ask for an informal review of the trust documents.

Dana read silently for several minutes.

"The second clause is a trap," she said finally.

Caroline leaned toward the screen.

"Marcus thinks so too."

"Not because audit authority is bad."

"Because the default examiner is Thomas."

"Correct."

Dana scrolled.

"But there is something else."

"What?"

"The disqualification standard is lower than your lawyer may think."

Mara looked over.

"Explain."

"You don't need to prove misconduct by Thomas before removing him."

"You need credible evidence of a direct conflict with the subject matter of the audit."

Caroline thought of the red folder.

"So if Thomas touched Orchid money personally, he can be removed."

"Potentially."

"And if we can't prove that?"

Dana looked at her.

"Then do not sign."

The simplicity was comforting.

Caroline had spent the night inside systems designed to make every choice feel impossible.

Sometimes the correct move was refusing the offered choice.

"Can Evelyn force the clause without me?"

"Not if the guardian signature requirement is valid."

"Can the board remove me first?"

"They can try."

Mara folded her arms.

"They just did."

Dana nodded.

"Then your real protection is evidence."

Caroline almost laughed.

"Everyone keeps saying that while stealing it."

Dana looked directly into the camera.

"Then stop carrying single copies."

The line sounded like Daniel Price again.

Single point of failure.

Caroline took out the penthouse storage card.

"Can you clone this?"

"Yes."

"Three copies."

"Five."

"Better."

Mara smiled faintly.

For the next thirty minutes, they created redundant encrypted copies and logged each transfer.

Caroline sent one to Mara's evidence vault.

Dana held one.

A third went to independent counsel.

The original stayed sealed.

For the first time since the penthouse, Caroline felt one piece of the story become harder to erase.

She understood why Adrian had loved systems.

Good systems did not depend on good people.

They anticipated bad days.

The tragedy was that he had understood that about data sooner than about family.

That evening, Caroline and Noah stayed at a secure apartment arranged by Mara.

Marcus was not invited.

Neither was Lila.

Caroline sat beside Noah on the floor while he ate grilled cheese from a paper plate.

She waited until he finished before asking.

"Did Dad ever take you to the old house in Connecticut?"

Noah nodded immediately.

Caroline felt her pulse increase.

"When?"

"Before his trip."

"The trip when he died?"

Noah looked down.

"Yes."

Caroline kept her breathing even.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Dad said it was a surprise."

"What kind of surprise?"

"A treasure hunt."

Caroline closed her eyes briefly.

Of course Adrian had turned secrecy into a game for Noah.

"What did you find?"

Noah thought.

"A blue room."

"What was in it?"

"Old pictures."

"Anything else?"

"A red box."

Caroline leaned forward.

"Did Dad open it?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"He didn't have the key."

The brass key Marcus had shown them.

"What did Dad do then?"

"He put his phone inside a wall."

Caroline stared.

"Inside a wall?"

Noah nodded.

"Behind a horse picture."

Caroline's throat tightened.

"Did he say why?"

"He said if he couldn't finish the game, you would."

Caroline reached for her phone and called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

"We're going to Connecticut."

"When?"

"Now."

"Caroline, it's two hours away."

"Then start driving."

"Are you taking Noah?"

She looked at her son.

Evelyn's warning returned.

Do not take Noah.

Thomas's instruction returned too.

Ask your son.

Everyone wanted Noah either present or absent for reasons Caroline did not trust.

"No," she said.

"He's staying with Mara."

Noah shook his head before she ended the call.

"Mom."

"No."

"Dad said I had to show you."

"Show me what?"

Noah stood and walked to his backpack.

He pulled out a folded drawing.

It showed the old Connecticut house in blue crayon.

A horse picture was drawn on the second floor.

Beside it, Noah had drawn three numbers.

7 - 1 - 4.

Caroline stared.

"What's that?"

"Dad told me to remember."

"A code?"

"I think."

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

For two seconds, there was only static.

Then Adrian's voice filled the room.

"Caroline, if you're hearing this, do not trust the red folder."

Caroline stopped breathing.

Noah's eyes went wide.

The recording continued.

"And whatever happens, do not let Thomas Keane become examiner."

A pause.

Then Adrian said something that made Caroline's hands shake.

"My mother is guilty of many things."

Another breath.

"But Orchid was not hers."

May you like

The call ended.
