Chapter 13 - The Witness Who Changed Sides.

The Manhattan archive occupied three windowless floors beneath Vale Meridian's oldest office tower.

By the time Caroline, Evelyn, and Marcus arrived, Northbridge investigators were already arguing with building security in the lobby.

The manual shutdown had triggered a preservation alert.

That meant whoever touched the server had acted after the audit notices went out.

No one could later claim ignorance.

Caroline liked that.

Records remembered.

People pretended not to.

The phrase had become Adrian's ghost inside her head.

Wade Mercer met them at the service elevator.

He was no longer wearing his penthouse security badge.

"You got fired," Caroline said.

"Technically suspended."

"For helping me?"

"For violating chain of command."

Evelyn walked past him.

"You did."

Wade looked at her.

"Nice to see you too."

Caroline almost smiled.

They descended to the archive level.

The hallway lights were bright enough to feel clinical.

The server room door was open.

Inside, two racks were dark.

Northbridge technicians worked around them.

A woman in a gray suit approached.

"Caroline Mercer?"

"Yes."

"Dana Cho, Northbridge."

They shook hands.

"We have a bigger issue than shutdown."

"What?"

"A physical storage module is missing."

Evelyn's face tightened.

"Which one?"

Dana looked at her tablet.

"ORC-MASTER-7."

Marcus whispered, "Orchid master ledger."

Caroline stared at the empty slot in the rack.

"When was it removed?"

"Between 1:31 and 1:39."

"Security footage?"

Dana looked toward Wade.

"Looped."

Wade nodded.

"Someone fed eight minutes of old corridor footage into the system."

"Who can do that?"

"Anyone with admin-level physical access and the right override."

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"Thomas."

Dana glanced at her.

"That is a conclusion, not evidence."

Caroline liked Dana immediately.

A technician called from the doorway.

"Ms. Cho, we recovered a partial badge log."

Dana took the tablet.

One access event appeared at 1:34 a.m.

Badge owner: VICTOR SLOANE.

Caroline felt her stomach tighten.

The man from her townhouse.

The man from the elevator.

Wade looked at the log.

"Sloane does not work here."

Marcus answered.

"He works for Thomas."

Dana shook her head.

"Not according to our vendor records."

She opened another screen.

Victor Sloane's security company had been paid for the previous six months by a consulting firm called Halcyon Strategic.

The ultimate client field was hidden.

Marcus leaned closer.

"I can trace Halcyon."

Dana looked at him.

"Not on my network, you can't."

He stepped back.

Caroline's phone rang.

Lila.

She considered ignoring it.

Then answered.

"What?"

Lila was breathing hard.

"I'm outside your secure apartment."

"Why?"

"Because someone left something with the doorman for Noah."

Caroline's entire body tightened.

"Do not touch it."

"I didn't."

"What is it?"

"A music box."

Noah loved mechanical music boxes.

Adrian had given him one every Christmas.

"Who sent it?"

"No name."

Caroline looked at Evelyn.

"Stay there. Security is coming."

She ended the call.

Dana had been listening.

"I'll send someone."

Before Caroline could answer, the archive elevator opened.

Two Northbridge security officers stepped out with a man between them.

Victor Sloane.

His gray tie was gone.

The scar near his ear was clearly visible.

Caroline's hands went cold.

Victor saw her and stopped.

"You."

Dana stepped in front of him.

"Mr. Sloane entered through a loading dock at 2:06."

"Why?" Caroline asked.

Victor looked at Evelyn.

"I came to talk."

"To whom?"

"Her."

Evelyn's expression remained blank.

"I have nothing to say to you."

Victor laughed quietly.

"You should."

Dana folded her arms.

"Start with the storage module."

Victor looked toward the dark server rack.

"I didn't take it."

"Your badge was used."

"My badge was cloned."

"Convenient."

"True."

Caroline stepped closer.

"You broke into my house."

Victor looked at her.

"Yes."

The direct answer unsettled her.

"Thomas sent you."

"No."

Marcus moved forward.

"You invoice Halcyon."

Victor looked at him.

"And you think Thomas owns Halcyon."

"Doesn't he?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"No."

Caroline's patience snapped.

"Who does?"

Victor turned toward Evelyn.

Evelyn's face remained controlled, but her emerald ring turned beneath her thumb.

Noah's tell.

Caroline noticed.

"Evelyn?"

Victor shook his head.

"Not directly."

"Then who?"

Victor looked back at Caroline.

"Adrian did."

Silence filled the server room.

Marcus stared.

"That's impossible."

"Halcyon Strategic was incorporated by Adrian six years ago."

Caroline felt dizzy.

"Why would my husband pay you to break into my house?"

Victor's expression changed.

"He didn't."

"You just said Halcyon paid you."

"After Adrian died, control transferred."

"To whom?"

Victor looked at the floor.

"That's why I came."

Dana stepped closer.

"Name."

Victor inhaled.

"Ruth Calder."

Caroline felt the pieces shift again.

Ruth had almost voted with Evelyn.

Ruth had Adrian's conflict evidence.

Ruth had just resigned and fled toward Zurich.

"Ruth ordered the break-in?"

Victor nodded.

"She wanted the ledger."

"Why?"

"Because she has been running Orchid since Adrian died."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Marcus whispered, "No."

Victor continued.

"Thomas thinks he is taking control."

"Evelyn thinks Thomas is the threat."

"Ruth needs both of them to keep thinking that."

Caroline stared at him.

"And the master ledger?"

Victor's face went grim.

"Ruth has it."

Dana looked at the time.

"Her Zurich flight departed twelve minutes ago."

Victor shook his head.

"She isn't on it."

"We have airport records."

"You have a boarding scan."

He looked directly at Caroline.

May you like

"Ruth never left Manhattan."
