Chapter 17 - The Boy in the Blue Sweater.

Noah was sitting cross-legged on the rug when Caroline returned to the secure apartment.
He still wore the dark blue sweater from the night before.
The music box rested on the coffee table.
It was small, wooden, and painted with tiny silver stars.
Adrian had given it to Noah on his fifth birthday.
Caroline remembered winding it while Noah danced around the kitchen.
She had never noticed the seam beneath the base.
Mara sat beside him with the hidden drawer open.
Inside lay a blue encrypted memory key no larger than Caroline's thumb.
A handwritten note rested next to it.
Caroline crossed the room and wrapped Noah in both arms.
He squeezed her neck.
"You came back."
"Always."
She stayed there longer than she intended.
Then she sat beside him.
"Did Dad ever tell you about this?"
Noah looked at the music box.
"He said it had a secret song."
"What song?"
Noah hummed four notes.
Caroline recognized the melody.
It was an old lullaby Adrian used to sing badly when Noah was a baby.
Mara opened the laptop.
"The drive asks for an eight-character password."
Caroline looked at Noah.
"Did Dad give you a password?"
Noah shook his head.
"He said the answer was what he always forgot."
Caroline almost laughed.
"That could be anything."
Adrian forgot umbrellas.
He forgot dry cleaning.
He forgot where he put his glasses while wearing them.
Noah thought harder.
"He said, 'Mom always remembers it.'"
Caroline stared at the password field.
What did she always remember that Adrian forgot?
Anniversaries.
Appointments.
Milk.
Chargers.
Then she remembered the lullaby.
Adrian always forgot the last word of the second verse.
Caroline would correct him.
He would pretend he had done it on purpose.
"Starlight," she whispered.
Eight letters.
Mara typed STARLIGH.
Rejected.
Caroline frowned.
"No."
Noah smiled slightly.
"Dad spelled it wrong."
Caroline looked at him.
"What?"
"On my birthday card."
He ran to his backpack and pulled out a folded card he had kept for months.
On the inside, Adrian had written, YOU ARE MY STARLITE.
Noah pointed.
"He said it was our spelling."
Seven letters.
Mara entered STARLITE plus the number six for Noah's age.
Rejected.
Noah shook his head.
"I was five."
Mara entered STARLITE5.
The drive unlocked.
Caroline stared at her son.
"How do you remember all this?"
Noah shrugged.
"Dad said it mattered."
The drive opened into a single encrypted archive.
Mara disconnected the laptop from the internet before extracting it.
Inside were thousands of files.
Bank records.
Invoices.
Audio recordings.
Photographs.
Internal messages.
A master index titled ORCHID_LEDGER_FINAL.
Caroline felt the room become quiet around her.
This was what everyone had been chasing.
Adrian had hidden the entire record inside his son's music box.
Not because Noah could understand it.
Because Noah was the one person Adrian believed everyone would underestimate.
Mara opened the master index.
The first tab listed entities and payment streams.
The second listed service vendors.
The third listed authorized sponsors.
Names appeared beside dates and amounts.
Thomas Keane appeared repeatedly.
Ruth Calder appeared less often but beside larger transfers.
Evelyn Vale appeared in a column marked AWARE/APPROVED on several containment settlements.
Caroline's stomach turned.
She had hoped some part of Evelyn's story would be cleaner.
It was not.
Then Mara stopped scrolling.
"Caroline."
"What?"
She pointed to a line.
HALCYON STRATEGIC.
Sponsor: ADRIAN VALE.
Caroline stared.
"No."
Mara clicked.
Halcyon's payments were separated into two categories.
The first contained legitimate investigative work Adrian had commissioned to map Orchid.
The second contained payments made after his death.
Control authorization changed three days after the funeral.
New sponsor: RUTH CALDER.
Caroline exhaled.
At least that part matched Victor's account.
Mara opened another folder.
VEHICLE_ACCESS.
Caroline's hand tightened around the edge of the table.
"Open it."
"Noah is here."
Caroline looked at her son.
"Buddy, can you go with Ms. Jenna into the other room?"
Noah's face hardened.
"You promised."
Caroline remembered the pharmacy.
Adults lie when kids leave.
She sat beside him.
"You're right."
Mara looked at her carefully.
Caroline continued.
"There are things in here about Dad's accident."
Noah swallowed.
"Bad things?"
"Maybe."
"I want to know."
Caroline's heart hurt.
"You will know the truth."
"But you do not have to see every document to know it."
Noah thought about that.
"Can I stay nearby?"
"Yes."
He moved to the dining table with Jenna and began drawing.
Caroline and Mara opened the vehicle file.
There were access requests from Thomas.
Remote diagnostic logs.
Vendor emails.
One message stood out.
FROM: Thomas Keane.
TO: Fleet Systems Contractor.
SUBJECT: Vale Sedan - Immediate Compliance Hold.
The body requested a remote immobilization test for the vehicle while parked.
The contractor replied that such a command should not be issued while the vehicle was in motion.
Thomas answered with one sentence.
Understood.
Caroline's hands began shaking.
Mara opened the manufacturer log Northbridge had just uploaded.
At 8:17 a.m. on the day Adrian died, a remote command request was transmitted to the car.
The system rejected it because the vehicle was moving above the safety threshold.
At 8:18, a second command attempted to place the vehicle into restricted performance mode.
That command partially executed.
At 8:19, Adrian's car lost telemetry connection.
The crash occurred at 8:23.
Caroline stared at the timestamps.
"Can that prove the command caused the crash?"
Mara shook her head.
"Not by itself."
"But it proves someone tried."
"Yes."
"From whose account?"
Mara scrolled.
User credential: TKEANE-ADMIN.
Thomas.
Caroline closed her eyes.
Across the room, Noah quietly colored a blue car beneath a yellow sun.
Mara opened the next file.
An audio recording.
Timestamp: 8:16 a.m.
Adrian's voice came through his car microphone.
"Thomas, stop calling me."
Then Thomas.
"You are making a mistake."
Adrian answered.
"No. I made the mistake years ago when I let you convince me Orchid could be contained."
Thomas's voice sharpened.
"Pull over."
"Why?"
"Because you do not understand what you are carrying."
Adrian laughed once.
"I understand exactly what I'm carrying."
The recording ended.
Caroline sat frozen.
Noah looked up from his drawing.
"Was that Dad?"
Caroline turned toward him.
"Yes."
"Was he scared?"
She considered lying.
Then remembered her promise.
"I think he was."
Noah nodded slowly.
"He was brave anyway."
Caroline's eyes finally filled.
"Yes."
Her phone rang.
Thomas Keane.
She answered.
"We have the ledger."
Silence.
Then Thomas spoke very softly.
"Then you know Adrian wasn't innocent either."
Caroline looked at the screen full of evidence.
"I know enough."
"No."
Thomas's voice turned almost gentle.
"You haven't reached the last account yet."
He ended the call.
Mara and Caroline looked at each other.
They returned to the master index.
At the bottom was a tab they had not opened.
LAST ACCOUNT.
It required a second password.
And beneath the password field was a single hint.
