CHAPTER 1 — The Whisper in the Corridor

CHAPTER 1 — The Whisper in the Corridor

The words echoed in her mind like a siren that refused to fade.

“The baby is still alive.”

For a second, she couldn’t move. Her body remained frozen against the hospital sheets, wires still attached to her skin, her heart monitor beeping unevenly like it couldn’t decide whether she was alive or not.

Quincy stood in the doorway, small shoulders trembling. His eyes darted down the hallway as if someone might catch him for speaking.

“No…” she whispered, her voice breaking. “That’s not possible. They told me—”

“I heard them,” he cut in quickly. “I wasn’t supposed to. I followed Grandma.”

Her husband finally moved. Daniel stepped forward, but instead of going to her, he grabbed Quincy’s arm.

“What are you talking about?” Daniel’s voice was sharp, too sharp. “Go back to the waiting room.”

But Quincy didn’t move.

“I saw the baby,” he said.

Silence swallowed the room.

Even the mother-in-law stopped praying.

Quincy swallowed hard. “They didn’t take her upstairs. They took her… outside.”

That single sentence shattered everything.

Outside.

Not the NICU. Not the nursery.

Outside the hospital.

The mother-in-law’s Bible slipped slightly in her hands.

“That child was stillborn,” she said firmly, too quickly. “You’re confused, sweetheart.”

But Quincy shook his head, tears forming.

“I saw her move.”

Something inside the mother broke open.

She ripped the IV from her arm.

“No,” she said, voice shaking but rising. “No. My baby is alive.”

And before anyone could stop her, she ran.

Barefoot, weak, still bleeding—she ran straight out of the hospital room.

Straight toward the back exit.

Toward the dumpsters.

Toward the truth.
