CHAPTER 2 — The Blue Blanket

CHAPTER 2 — The Blue Blanket
The night air outside was cold enough to burn her lungs.
She stumbled behind the hospital, her hospital gown flapping like a ghost behind her. Every step hurt, but fear carried her faster than pain ever could.
“Baby!” she shouted. “My baby!”
The back alley smelled of bleach and garbage. Metal bins lined the wall like silent witnesses.
Then she saw it.
A faded blue blanket.
On the ground.
Half-hidden behind a black trash bag.
Her heart stopped.
“No… no, no, no…”
She dropped to her knees and grabbed it.
It was warm.
Still warm.
Inside—
A tiny sound.
A breath.
A weak, fragile cry.
Her daughter.
Alive.
Tears exploded from her eyes as she pulled the baby into her chest. The newborn’s skin was pale, lips trembling, but she was breathing.
“She’s alive…” she sobbed. “Oh my God, she’s alive!”
Footsteps suddenly echoed behind her.
Slow.
Deliberate.
She turned.
Daniel stood at the end of the alley.
His face was unreadable.
Behind him, his mother.
And Quincy, watching from the doorway, shaking.
Daniel’s voice was quiet. Too quiet.
“You weren’t supposed to find her.”
The world tilted.
Her grip tightened around the baby.
“What did you do?” she whispered.
The mother-in-law stepped forward, clutching her Bible like a weapon.
“It was the right decision,” she said. “That child was never meant to live.”
Something in that sentence broke reality itself.
“You tried to kill her,” the mother whispered, horrified.
Daniel didn’t deny it.
May you like
He just looked away.
And that silence was the confession.
