The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Sirens pierced the quiet streets of Cedar Hollow as paramedics fought to keep the tiny newborn alive.
Officer Daniel Hayes stood frozen for only a second before turning back toward the little girl.
She hadn't moved.
She still sat in the same metal chair, her bare feet dangling above the floor.
Someone had wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.
She didn't seem to notice.
Daniel knelt until they were eye level.
"What's your name, sweetheart?"
She stared at the floor.
"...Emily."
"Emily... how old are you?"
"Seven."
"Can you tell me where your parents are?"
Her lips trembled.
"They're sleeping."
Daniel frowned.
"Sleeping where?"
Emily slowly lifted her eyes.
"They wouldn't wake up."
Silence swallowed the room.
Daniel's pulse quickened.
"What do you mean they wouldn't wake up?"
Emily swallowed.
"There were bottles."
"So many bottles."
"Mommy cried."
"Daddy kept yelling."
"Then everything got quiet."
She paused as if replaying the memory.
"I tried to wake Mommy."
"I shook her."
"I called her."
"She stayed cold."
Several officers exchanged worried glances.
Daniel spoke carefully.
"How long ago was that?"
Emily looked toward the window.
"I don't know."
"It got dark."
"My brother started crying."
"So I fed him."
Daniel's heart tightened.
"What did you feed him?"
She lowered her head.
"I didn't have milk."
"So I gave him little drops of water."
"I thought babies just needed to drink."
Nobody in the station blamed her.
She was seven.
She had done everything she knew.
Emily continued in a whisper.
"I waited."
"I thought Mommy would wake up."
"When my brother stopped crying..."
Her voice broke.
"I got scared."
"So I wrapped him in towels."
"I remembered Mommy saying police help people."
"So I walked."
Daniel asked softly,
"You carried him the whole way?"
Emily nodded.
"I couldn't leave him alone."
Tears finally rolled down Daniel's face.
This child had carried more responsibility in one night than many adults faced in a lifetime.
