Chapter 2: A Town Awakens

Chapter 2: A Town Awakens

The tiny house stood at the end of an abandoned road.

Its front door hung half open.

Inside...

Everything was exactly as Emily had described.

Two adults lay motionless in the living room.

Prescription bottles covered the floor.

There had been no violence.

No intruder.

Just addiction...

...and despair.

Medical examiners confirmed they had died many hours before Emily began her desperate walk to the police station.

The entire town was devastated.

News spread quickly.

The seven-year-old who had carried her newborn brother through the night became the story everyone was talking about.

Neighbors couldn't stop asking themselves the same question.

How had no one noticed?

Teachers remembered Emily always arriving hungry.

Cashiers recalled seeing her buying instant noodles with loose coins.

A mail carrier admitted hearing a baby crying days earlier but assuming the parents were home.

Everyone had seen pieces of the puzzle.

No one had seen the whole picture.

Meanwhile, at the hospital...

Doctors worked through the night.

The newborn had severe dehydration and hypothermia.

More than once, his heartbeat became dangerously weak.

Emily refused to leave the waiting room.

She sat with Daniel beside her until sunrise.

Finally...

A pediatrician walked toward them with tired eyes.

"He made it."

Emily didn't smile.

She simply whispered,

"I knew he was strong."

The doctor looked at Daniel.

"If she had arrived even thirty minutes later..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't have to.

Daniel looked at Emily.

For the first time since she had entered the station...

She closed her eyes.

And fell asleep against his shoulder.
