Chapter 1 – The Footage Never Lies

Chapter 1 – The Footage Never Lies
The ballroom remained frozen as the distant sirens grew louder.
For the first time that evening, Preston's confidence cracked.
His eyes darted instinctively toward the small security camera mounted above the entrance.
"What camera?" he asked, forcing out a laugh.
"Hotels overwrite footage all the time."
I didn't answer.
Instead, I wrapped my shawl around Sophie's bleeding head while another guest finally found the courage to call an ambulance.
A hotel security manager hurried into the ballroom.
"What happened here?"
Before anyone could answer, Preston stepped forward.
"The child assaulted herself after stealing my phone."
Several guests nodded.
Others looked away.
Then an elderly man stood.
It was Judge Harold Bennett, one of Preston's wedding guests.
"I saw enough to know that little girl never touched that phone."
The room grew silent.
The security manager spoke calmly.
"Our ballroom has four synchronized security cameras."
"Nothing inside this room has been erased."
Preston's face turned pale.
Within minutes, Chicago police officers arrived together with paramedics.
As Sophie was placed onto a stretcher, she reached for my hand.
"I told the truth, Mommy."
I kissed her forehead.
"I know, sweetheart."

"And tonight...
everyone else will know it too."
