One year later, Sophie stood on another stage.
This time, there were no accusations.
No shouting.
No fear.
She was receiving the city's Youth Courage Award for helping other children speak up about bullying and abuse.
As she accepted the medal, she looked into the audience until her eyes found mine.
Then she smiled.
The same brave smile she had worn in the ambulance that terrible night.
After the ceremony, she slipped her small hand into mine.
"Mom?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do you think Uncle Preston is still angry?"
I smiled gently.
"Maybe."
"But that's his story."
"Ours is different."
"We survived."
"We told the truth."
"And the truth set us free."
