They barricaded themselves in Ethan's private study, shoving heavy mahogany desks and leather sofas against the reinforced doors. The muffled sounds of heavy boots echoing in the halls told them the remaining mercenaries were regrouping for a breach.
"Genesis," Ethan said, staring at Rosa in the dim, narrow beam of his flashlight as he bandaged a cut on his arm. "I recognized the gear on that man. They're black ops, funded by my own R&D division. Why are my own people trying to kill you?"
"Because four years ago, I proved your flagship drug was a slow-acting poison," Rosa said, her voice steady despite the chaos, holding Lily tightly. "It degrades organ tissue over time. I tried to bring the data to you, but your executives intercepted me. They threatened my life. They threatened my family. I found out I was pregnant with Lily the very next day."

Ethan looked at the little girl, his stoic expression completely crumbling. A single tear cut through the dirt, sweat, and blood masking his face. "You hid in my house. You raised our daughter in the shadows of my own home."
"It was the only place they couldn't touch me without drawing your attention," Rosa explained, wiping a tear of her own. "I've been holding the encrypted drive containing the raw data. Vanessa is working for them. She’s trying to scrub the evidence and eliminate me before the FDA grants final approval tomorrow morning."
