The massive backup generators, designed to power the estate for a month, failed to kick in. Someone had physically severed the underground lines.
Down in the pitch-black servant's quarters, Rosa's breath hitched as she heard the distinct, terrifying sound of glass shattering in the west wing. It was followed by the crunch of tactical boots on the marble floors. These weren't standard burglars looking for jewelry; they moved with the eerie, synchronized silence of highly trained paramilitaries. They were sweeping the rooms, executing a search-and-destroy pattern.
She grabbed a heavy-duty flashlight but didn't turn it on. She threw a thick wool coat over Lily's shoulders.
"We have to play a game, my sweet girl," Rosa whispered into the dark, her voice trembling but fierce with a mother's resolve. "It's called the silent game. The bad men are looking for us, and Button the rabbit needs you to be very, very quiet to protect him."
Lily nodded solemnly, her huge eyes catching the faint moonlight leaking through the door cracks. She clutched the worn cloth rabbit tightly to her chest.
