Chapter 16 - The Infiltration.Ethan loaded the last magazine into his tactical rig, the metallic click echoing loudly in the sterile clinic.

His left shoulder throbbed with a dull, sickening agony, but the heavy dose of adrenaline and painkillers Volkov had administered kept him on his feet.

Rosa watched him from the doorway, her dark eyes wide with a mixture of terror and desperate admiration.

"You cannot go in there alone, Ethan," she pleaded, stepping forward to touch his uninjured arm.

"It is a fortress."

Ethan looked down at her, his expression softening just enough to show the man he had been four years ago in Queens.

"If I don't cut the head off the snake tonight, we will never be free," he explained softly.

He reached out and gently stroked Lily’s cheek as the little girl slept soundly on a cot in the corner.

"Keep them safe, Ilya," Ethan ordered, turning to the towering Russian doctor.

"With my life, my friend," Volkov promised, racking the slide of his shotgun with menacing finality.

Ethan slipped out the back door of the clinic, vanishing into the freezing, rain-slicked streets of Brooklyn.

He stole a nondescript delivery van idling behind a diner, hotwiring it with his good hand in less than thirty seconds.

The drive across the Manhattan Bridge was a blur of flashing sirens and police blockades, all desperately searching for him.

He bypassed the main checkpoints by taking the forgotten subterranean access tunnels used by utility companies in the 1970s.

His destination was the towering, glass-and-steel monolith of Haynes International in the Financial District.

The skyscraper was a monument to Alexander Haynes’s criminal empire, masquerading as a legitimate private security firm.

Ethan parked the van three blocks away, approaching the building through the sprawling, interconnected sewer system.

He breached the sub-basement using a thermite charge to melt through the reinforced steel access grate.

The security feed on his wrist monitor confirmed his earlier hack; the building's internal cameras were looping pre-recorded footage.

He stepped into the main elevator shaft, attaching a motorized ascender to the heavy steel transport cables.

With his right hand holding the throttle, he began a terrifying, silent ascent up forty stories in absolute darkness.

Every muscle in his back screamed in protest, but the image of Lily’s frightened eyes pushed him upward.

He forced open the elevator doors on the fortieth floor, stepping into the sprawling executive server farm.

Three heavily armed guards were patrolling the glowing aisles of data mainframes.

Ethan drew a silenced tactical knife and melted into the shadows, becoming the very ghost they feared.
