Chapter 20 - The Ghost in the Sun.Three months later.

The sun beat down warmly on the pristine, white sands of a secluded beach in Costa Rica.
Rosa walked along the shoreline, the crystal-clear water lapping gently at her bare feet.
She wore a simple, flowing sundress, her face finally free of the deep lines of exhaustion that had haunted her in New York.
A few yards ahead, Lily was furiously building a lopsided sandcastle, laughing as a tiny crab scuttled over her moat.
"Need some help with the structural integrity of that tower?" a deep, warm voice asked.
Ethan walked out from the shade of a palm tree, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade.
He looked entirely different.
His hair was longer, catching the salt and sun, and the rigid tension that used to define his posture was completely gone.
The only reminder of their nightmare was the faint, jagged scar peeking out from the collar of his linen shirt.
"Daddy!" Lily squealed, abandoning her plastic shovel and running into his arms.
Ethan caught her, spinning her around in the warm air before settling her onto his hip.
Rosa smiled, walking over and resting her head against Ethan's shoulder.
"It's beautiful here," she murmured, closing her eyes and listening to the waves.
"It's home," Ethan replied, kissing the top of her head.
They had disappeared flawlessly, erasing all digital footprints and leaving the ashes of the Caldwell empire behind.
Alexander and Victoria were rotting in separate maximum-security prisons, denied bail and facing life sentences.
For the first time in his life, Ethan felt truly, completely at peace.
As they walked back toward their beachfront villa, a heavily encrypted burner phone buzzed violently in Ethan's pocket.
Ethan froze, the blood draining from his face.
Nobody on earth had this number.
He slowly handed Lily to Rosa, motioning for them to keep walking toward the house.
With trembling fingers, Ethan pulled the phone from his pocket and pressed it to his ear.
"Hello?" he answered, his voice dropping into a lethal, guarded whisper.
"Did you really think it was just Victoria running the show, Ethan?" a smooth, unfamiliar, terrifyingly calm voice asked over the line.
Ethan's eyes widened in horror.
From the dense jungle tree line perfectly overlooking the beach, a faint, undeniable red laser dot flickered to life.
It danced across the sand, sweeping past Ethan, before coming to a dead stop directly on the back of Lily’s stuffed rabbit.

"We are coming to collect our debt," the voice whispered.
The line went dead.
