Chapter 8 - The Safehouse. The boat drifted silently into the abandoned, decaying docks of an industrial shipyard in Queens.

Ethan expertly guided the vessel into an old, rusting boathouse and secured the mooring lines in total darkness.
He climbed down into the cabin, his clothes soaked with freezing seawater and his knuckles still bleeding.
Rosa looked up at him, her eyes wide with lingering terror.
"They passed us," Ethan whispered, his voice hoarse from the freezing wind.
"We are clear for the moment, but we have to move before they triangulate our radar signature."
He unbuckled Lily, who had mercifully fallen asleep despite the violent pitching of the boat.
Rosa gathered their few remaining belongings, stepping out into the freezing November air.
They navigated the labyrinth of rusted shipping containers and broken cranes until they reached a nondescript, cinderblock warehouse.
Ethan approached a keypad hidden behind a rusty electrical box and punched in a rapid sequence.
A heavy steel door clicked open, revealing a sparse but secure interior.
The safehouse contained a small kitchenette, a bed, a weapons locker, and an array of encrypted communication servers.
Ethan locked the door behind them and engaged three separate deadbolts.
"Put her on the bed," Ethan said softly, pointing to a modest mattress in the corner.
Rosa gently laid the sleeping toddler down, tucking a heavy wool blanket under her chin.
She stood up and finally faced Ethan, the adrenaline leaving her body and being replaced by a profound, crushing exhaustion.
"You brought us to Queens," Rosa observed quietly.
"It was the only place I knew they wouldn't immediately look," Ethan replied, avoiding her gaze.
"They expect me to run to my offshore accounts or my private airstrip in Jersey."
He walked over to a sink and began washing the dried blood from his hands.
"I need to make a call," he continued.
"I have one contact left in the intelligence community who isn't on Victoria's payroll."
Rosa walked up behind him, her voice trembling but resolute.
"You lied to me four years ago, Ethan."
Ethan froze, gripping the edges of the porcelain sink until his knuckles turned white.
"I told you the truth today," he said, turning around to face her.
"I left you because I knew the syndicate would use you to break me."
"I thought I was doing the right thing by disappearing."
Rosa shook her head, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes.
"You took away my right to choose," she cried softly.
"You left me to raise our daughter in poverty while you lived in a palace playing the part of a cold billionaire."
Ethan reached out, hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently wiping a tear from her cheek.
May you like
"I will spend the rest of my life making up for that," he promised, his voice filled with a desperate, raw sincerity.
"But right now, I just need to keep you both alive."
