“Sit in the back. You’re only family on paper.”
Avery Whitmore said it with a smile.
And that was what made the entire ballroom go silent.
Avery stood beneath a crystal chandelier in a white satin wedding gown that looked like it cost more than a small house. Her blonde hair was styled into a flawless bridal updo, and her veil cascaded down her back like liquid silk. In one hand, she held a champagne flute.
In front of her stood her stepmother, Caroline Whitmore.

Caroline wore a simple navy-blue evening dress and understated pearl earrings. She looked composed, elegant in a quiet way—but almost out of place among the glittering crowd.
For a moment, some guests thought Avery was joking.
Then Avery tilted the glass.
Champagne spilled over Caroline’s shoulder, splashing across the front of her dress and dripping down her cheek.
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.
Even the live band faltered and came to a stop.
Caroline didn’t move.
She simply closed her eyes for half a second as the champagne slid down her chin and fell onto the polished marble floor.
Avery’s smile sharpened.
“You heard me.”
Beside her, the groom let out a small, amused laugh.

Logan Pierce, thirty years old, sharp in a tailored black tuxedo, leaned slightly toward Avery as if he approved of every word.
“She should be grateful we even invited her.”
