CHAPTER 1: The Silence Beneath the Chandeliers

CHAPTER 1: The Silence Beneath the Chandeliers
The champagne kept dripping from Caroline Whitmore’s shoulder.
One drop. Then another.
No one moved to help her.
Not the guests in diamond necklaces. Not the managers in black suits. Not even the groom’s family seated at the front table.
Avery still held the empty flute like a weapon she was proud of.
Caroline slowly opened her eyes.
There was no shock in them.
Only disappointment.
“You think this is your moment?” Avery said, her voice ringing across the ballroom. “After everything? After you walked into my father’s life and acted like you belonged here?”
A few guests shifted uncomfortably.
But Logan Pierce only smiled wider.
“She’s just standing there,” he whispered. “Pathetic.”
Caroline finally reached for a napkin from the nearby table. She wiped her face calmly, as if the champagne were nothing more than rain.
“You’re making a mistake,” she said quietly.
Avery laughed.
“A mistake? The only mistake was my father ever marrying you.”
That name—her father—made a few older guests glance at each other.
Because some of them remembered something Avery didn’t.
Or pretended not to.
Caroline placed the napkin down neatly.
Then she reached into her small silver clutch.
The ballroom grew slightly tense.
“Let me show you something,” she said.
Avery rolled her eyes. “What, your victim card?”
Caroline didn’t answer.
She simply pressed a button on her phone.
And behind the grand stage, the massive chandelier lights flickered once.
Then the entire ballroom went dark.
Gasps erupted.
Music cut out completely.
And in the sudden black silence, Caroline’s voice was the only thing left.
“You wanted to know where you are standing, Avery?”
A soft click echoed.
May you like
Emergency lights slowly turned on.
And what they revealed made the entire room freeze.
