Chapter 1: The Memory Card

Chapter 1: The Memory Card

The memory card was sealed in an evidence bag before anyone was allowed to leave the property.

My father watched every movement the detectives made.

For the first time in my life, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Fear.

The lead detective looked at each member of the family.

"No one leaves town until this investigation is complete."

My mother protested immediately.

"This is ridiculous. We have done nothing wrong."

The detective didn't even look at her.

"Then you have nothing to worry about."

At the hospital, Lily was rushed into emergency surgery.

The pediatric trauma team worked for nearly three hours.

Marcus sat beside me in silence.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, a doctor walked toward us.

"She survived."

The words nearly brought me to my knees.

"But..."

Every parent fears that word.

"She suffered severe dehydration, bruising, and mild hypothermia. We also found traces of a sedative in her bloodstream."

My heart stopped.

"A sedative?"

The doctor nodded.

"It wasn't enough to kill her."

"But it was enough to keep a frightened child from screaming."

Marcus slowly closed his eyes.

Someone hadn't simply abandoned Lily.

Someone had planned it.

That evening, Detective Harris received the first report from the forensic laboratory.

The fingerprints on the prescription bottle belonged to Vanessa.

The medication had also been found inside Lily's blood.

One piece of evidence connected directly to another.

Detective Harris quietly looked toward the evidence technician.

"Let's see what's on that memory card."

The room became silent.

The video began to play.
