Arrest warrants were signed before sunrise.
Vanessa was the first to break.
Inside the interrogation room, she cried uncontrollably.
"I didn't mean for this to happen."
Detective Harris placed the video on the table.
"You put a child inside a dumpster."
"I only wanted to scare her!"
"Who told you to do it?"
Vanessa looked toward the mirror.
She knew someone was watching.
"My aunt..."
She whispered.
"...said Lily was ruining everything."
The detective leaned forward.
"What did she mean?"
Vanessa wiped away tears.
"My aunt said her daughter deserved the family inheritance."
"And Lily didn't."
Meanwhile, my father continued denying everything.
Until detectives showed him another piece of evidence.
Cell phone messages.
Deleted.
Recovered.
One message from my mother read:
"Leave her there until after the guests leave."
Another followed.
"No one will believe a child anyway."
My father's shoulders slowly dropped.
