Chapter 3: The Man Behind the White Coat

Chapter 3: The Man Behind the White Coat

Theodore Vale stared at the identification badge in his hand.

The rain continued falling around him.

Heavy.

Cold.

Relentless.

But he barely felt it.

Because the name printed across the badge seemed impossible.

Dr. Adrian Mercer.

The same man who had stood beside Rosalie’s coffin.

The same man who had calmly explained that her heart had stopped.

The same man who had watched Theodore break the glass to save his sister.

The same man who was now running away from her hospital room with a syringe in his hand.

For several seconds, Theodore couldn’t move.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

People could lie.

People could manipulate.

People could hide secrets.

But Dr. Adrian Mercer?

He had been part of the Vale family for years.

He had treated Theodore when he broke his arm as a child.

He had attended family dinners.

He had been trusted by their father.

He had been the person everyone believed was there to protect them.

Theodore looked back toward the hospital entrance.

Then down at the badge.

A terrifying thought entered his mind.

Maybe the person everyone trusted most…

Was the person they should have feared.

“Where did you get that?”

Sebastian’s voice came from behind him.

Theodore turned sharply.

His brother stood beneath the hospital entrance, his face unreadable.

But Theodore noticed something.

Sebastian wasn’t surprised.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

He looked like a man seeing something he had already expected.

Theodore held up the badge.

“Your doctor tried to kill her.”

Sebastian said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Theodore stepped closer.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

Theodore laughed once.

A bitter, angry sound.

“You suspected?”

Rain dripped from his hair.

“My sister almost died.”

Sebastian looked away.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Theodore’s voice shook.

“You weren’t there.”

A pause.

“You didn’t hear her inside that coffin.”

Sebastian’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Because Theodore realized something.

Sebastian had never asked what it sounded like.

He had never asked what Rosalie said.

He had only asked what Theodore knew.

And suddenly, Theodore understood.

Sebastian wasn’t just hiding something.

He was afraid of something.

Detective Olivia Grant arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later.

She entered the private waiting area carrying a folder.

Her eyes immediately went to the badge in Theodore’s hand.

“Where did you find that?”

Theodore explained everything.

Every detail.

The shadow.

The syringe.

The escape.

When he finished, Detective Grant remained silent.

Then she looked at Sebastian.

“Mr. Vale.”

Sebastian straightened.

“Yes?”

“Did Dr. Adrian Mercer have access to your sister’s medical records?”

“Yes.”

“Did he have access to her medication?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Detective Grant wrote something down.

“Did he know she would be declared dead?”

The question changed the atmosphere.

Sebastian looked at her.

“What are you suggesting?”

“I’m not suggesting anything.”

She closed the folder.

“I’m asking questions.”

Her eyes moved between the brothers.

“Because someone had knowledge of the entire process.”

Theodore frowned.

“What process?”

“The funeral arrangements.”

A silence.

Detective Grant continued.

“Who would prepare the body. Who would approve the death certificate. Who would organize the memorial. Who would place her in that coffin.”

Every word felt heavier.

“This wasn’t random.”

Theodore looked at Sebastian.

“It was planned.”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Inside Rosalie’s room, machines continued monitoring her fragile condition.

She watched Theodore and Sebastian through the glass.

Even from a distance, she could see the tension between them.

The brothers who had spent years barely understanding each other were now standing on the same side of a war neither of them expected.

A nurse entered.

“Ms. Vale?”

Rosalie looked up.

“Yes?”

“You have another visitor.”

Rosalie frowned.

“I’m not accepting visitors.”

The nurse hesitated.

“He says you asked for him.”

Rosalie’s face immediately changed.

“No.”

The nurse looked confused.

“He’s already inside.”

The door opened.

Rosalie’s heart stopped.

Not from illness.

From fear.

Because the person entering the room was the last person she wanted to see.

Adrian Mercer.

He looked exactly as he always had.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

Gentle eyes.

The face of a trusted friend.

The face of a murderer.

“Rosalie.”

His voice was soft.

Almost kind.

She immediately pressed the emergency button.

Adrian smiled sadly.

“You still don’t trust me.”

Rosalie stared at him.

“You tried to bury me.”

His expression didn’t change.

“I tried to save you.”

A cold chill moved through her.

“What?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“I know what you found.”

Rosalie’s breathing became uneven.

“You know about the documents.”

“Yes.”

“You know about my father.”

“Yes.”

The room felt smaller.

“You helped him.”

Adrian looked away.

For the first time, pain appeared on his face.

“I tried.”

Rosalie stared.

“Then why did he die?”

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Adrian whispered:

“Because Sebastian found out.”

Theodore reached Rosalie’s room just as security arrived.

He stopped outside the door.

Through the glass, he saw Adrian standing beside the bed.

His fists tightened.

He pushed the door open.

“What are you doing here?”

Adrian turned calmly.

“Theodore.”

The boy stepped between him and Rosalie.

“Get away from her.”

Adrian looked at him.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Almost sad.

“You’re just like your sister.”

“What does that mean?”

“You both see the truth before anyone else.”

Sebastian entered behind Theodore.

The room instantly became tense.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Adrian looked at Sebastian.

“Tell them.”

Sebastian’s face hardened.

“Leave.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Rosalie.

“She deserves to know.”

Theodore looked between them.

“What?”

Adrian reached into his coat.

Security immediately stepped forward.

But he pulled out only an old photograph.

A photograph that had been folded many times.

He placed it on the table.

Theodore picked it up.

His blood froze.

The picture showed three people.

Their father.

Adrian.

And Sebastian.

Standing outside a building Theodore had never seen before.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.

"If anything happens to me, trust Adrian. Not Sebastian."

Theodore looked up.

His voice barely worked.

“Dad wrote this?”

Sebastian moved forward.

“Give me that.”

Theodore stepped back.

“No.”

For the first time, Sebastian’s control completely broke.

“Theodore.”

The boy stared at him.

“What happened to Dad?”

Nobody spoke.

Then Rosalie answered.

Her voice was weak.

But clear.

“He discovered Sebastian was stealing from the family.”

The room went silent.

Sebastian looked at her.

“Rosalie…”

She continued.

“He found hidden accounts.”

Theodore felt the world shift.

“He found money transfers.”

A tear moved down her face.

“And he found out someone inside the family had been planning to destroy the Vale empire.”

Everyone looked at Sebastian.

But Sebastian didn’t defend himself.

Because he knew something worse was coming.

Rosalie looked directly at her older brother.

“The person who killed Dad…”

She took a painful breath.

“Is the same person who put me in that coffin.”

The next morning, every major news channel reported the same headline.

VALE FAMILY DEATH SCANDAL: QUESTIONS RAISED AFTER HEIR FOUND ALIVE

The world that had admired the Vale family for decades suddenly wanted answers.

Investors panicked.

The foundation faced investigations.

Old rumors returned.

And inside the Vale mansion…

Someone entered Sebastian’s private office.

They opened a locked drawer.

Removed a hidden file.

And placed a single note on the desk.

A note written in handwriting Sebastian recognized immediately.

Because he had seen it before.

Six years ago.

On the night his father died.

The message contained only six words:

"You failed to bury the truth."

Sebastian stared at it.

Then slowly looked toward the window.

Because he finally understood.

Rosalie waking up was not the beginning of his nightmare.

May you like

It was the beginning of someone else’s revenge.
