Chapter 6: The Enemy Behind the Name

Chapter 6: The Enemy Behind the Name
The Vale mansion had never been so crowded.
Yet somehow, it had never felt so lonely.
For years, the estate had been filled with celebrations, charity events, business meetings, and carefully arranged family dinners.
Everything had a purpose.
Every smile had been practiced.
Every conversation had been measured.
But tonight…
Nobody knew what to say.
Because the impossible had walked through the front door.
Evelyn Vale sat in the same dining room where her family had gathered every Sunday for decades.
The same chair.
The same table.
The same silverware.
But the people sitting around her were not the same.
Sebastian stood near the fireplace.
Theodore sat across from him, still struggling to accept reality.
Rosalie had been brought home from the hospital under medical supervision.
She looked weak.
But alive.
And that was enough.
The three siblings who had spent years separated by misunderstandings were finally sitting together.
With the woman who had supposedly been dead for twelve years.
Evelyn looked at them quietly.
Her children.
Her family.
The family she had abandoned.
Or rather…
The family she had been forced to leave.
“I know what you’re thinking.”
Her voice was soft.
Theodore looked at her.
“Do you?”
Evelyn nodded.
“You think I left you.”
Theodore didn’t answer.
Because he did.
Every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every moment he needed his mother.
He had wondered why she disappeared.
He had wondered why Sebastian never talked about her.
He had wondered why Rosalie always became quiet whenever someone mentioned her name.
“You were alive,” Theodore said.
His voice was controlled.
“But you let us believe you were dead.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“I had no choice.”
“There’s always a choice.”
The words hurt.
But Evelyn accepted them.
Because she knew Theodore had every right to be angry.
“I tried to come back.”
“When?”
“Many times.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
A painful silence filled the room.
Finally, Evelyn looked at Sebastian.
“Because every time I tried…”
Her voice became quieter.
“Someone stopped me.”
Everyone looked at Sebastian.
His expression immediately changed.
“No.”
Evelyn didn’t accuse him.
She didn’t need to.
The doubt was already there.
Rosalie watched carefully.
Because she noticed something strange.
Sebastian looked hurt.
Not guilty.
Hurt.
And that confused her.
Later that night, Theodore found Sebastian alone in the library.
The same room where so many secrets had been hidden.
“You knew.”
Sebastian didn’t turn around.
“Knew what?”
“That she was alive.”
Silence.
Theodore stepped closer.
“You knew.”
Sebastian finally looked at him.
“No.”
“Then why did you look terrified when she walked in?”
Sebastian looked away.
Because he couldn’t explain something even he didn’t understand.
For twelve years, he believed his mother was dead.
He believed the past was buried.
But seeing her alive forced him to question everything.
“I didn’t know.”
Theodore studied him.
For once, Sebastian looked honest.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a man who had lost control of his own life.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Sebastian sat down slowly.
“The truth is…”
He looked at the old family portraits.
“I don’t know who to trust anymore.”
Theodore remained silent.
Sebastian continued.
“Not Adrian.”
A pause.
“Not Mother.”
Another pause.
“Maybe not even myself.”
Upstairs, Rosalie sat with Evelyn.
The two women had barely spoken since the reunion.
There were too many emotions.
Too many unanswered questions.
Finally, Rosalie asked:
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Tell you what?”
“That you were alive.”
A tear formed in Evelyn’s eyes.
“Because you would have searched for me.”
Rosalie didn’t deny it.
“And you would have found me.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Evelyn looked down.
“And you would have died too.”
The words froze the room.
Rosalie stared.
“What?”
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“Your father wasn’t killed because he discovered financial crimes.”
Rosalie listened carefully.
“He was killed because he discovered a network.”
“What kind of network?”
“People inside companies. Banks. Foundations.”
Evelyn’s voice lowered.
“People who move money, erase evidence, and make problems disappear.”
Rosalie’s face tightened.
“Adrian was part of it.”
“Yes.”
“Who was leading it?”
Evelyn looked at her.
“That is the question your father died trying to answer.”
Rosalie whispered:
“And now someone tried to kill me because I found the same thing.”
Evelyn nodded.
“But there is something you don’t know.”
“What?”
Evelyn hesitated.
Then reached into her handbag.
She removed a small black notebook.
Rosalie recognized it instantly.
Her eyes widened.
“Dad’s journal.”
“Yes.”
“But Sebastian said it disappeared.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Sebastian never had it.”
Rosalie opened the notebook.
The first page contained only one sentence.
Written by her father.
"The person destroying this family is someone my children trust."
Her breathing changed.
Because beneath the sentence was a name.
A name she never expected.
At midnight, Dr. Adrian Mercer walked into an abandoned building on the edge of the city.
The building had been empty for years.
No cameras.
No security.
No witnesses.
Exactly what he needed.
He entered a dark room.
Someone was waiting.
“You failed.”
Adrian removed his coat.
“I didn’t.”
“The girl survived.”
A pause.
“That was not supposed to happen.”
Adrian’s face remained calm.
“She was stronger than expected.”
The person sitting in the shadows laughed.
“Stronger?”
A hand placed a file on the table.
“She ruined everything.”
Adrian looked at the file.
Inside were photographs.
Rosalie.
Theodore.
Sebastian.
Evelyn.
The entire Vale family.
“You said Sebastian would take the blame.”
“He will.”
“No.”
The voice became colder.
“He won’t.”
Adrian looked up.
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn returned.”
For the first time, Adrian looked worried.
The person continued.
“And she knows the truth.”
Adrian slowly closed the file.
“What do you want me to do?”
The answer came immediately.
“Remove the last witness.”
Adrian stared.
“Evelyn?”
A pause.
“No.”
The person leaned forward.
“Rosalie.”
The next morning, the Vale family received a package.
No sender.
No address.
Only one word written on the top.
CONFESSION.
Sebastian opened it.
Inside was a USB drive.
A photograph.
And a handwritten letter.
The photograph showed their father on the night he died.
Standing outside the estate.
Talking to someone.
Someone whose face had been hidden.
But the letter revealed the truth.
"If you are reading this, then I failed."
Sebastian’s hands tightened.
Rosalie took the letter.
Theodore looked over her shoulder.
The next sentence made everyone freeze.
"Do not trust the person who appears to be protecting you."
Silence.
Because suddenly…
the question changed.
They were no longer searching for who wanted to destroy the Vale family.
They were searching for who had been pretending to save them.
And then the final line appeared.
"The greatest betrayal will come from the person carrying my name."
Everyone looked at Sebastian.
But Sebastian wasn’t looking at them.
He was looking at the photograph.
Because he recognized the hidden figure standing beside his father.
And he whispered:
“No…”
Theodore turned.
“What?”
Sebastian’s face lost all color.
“That’s impossible.”
“Who is it?”
Sebastian slowly lifted the photograph.
His voice barely existed.
May you like
“Me.”
