Chapter 9: The Child Hidden From the World

Chapter 9: The Child Hidden From the World
Theodore Vale had spent his entire life trying to understand where he belonged.
Now, in less than twenty-four hours, he discovered the terrifying possibility that he never belonged anywhere.
The words kept repeating in his mind.
Your birth was not an accident.
You were created because your father was trying to protect something.
He sat alone in the library, staring at the old family portraits hanging across the walls.
Generations of Vales.
Powerful.
Respected.
Untouchable.
But he no longer recognized the family staring back at him.
Because maybe he had never truly been one of them.
Maybe his entire life had been built on a secret.
Theodore looked down at his hands.
The same hands that had broken the coffin glass.
The same hands that had pulled Rosalie back from death.
The same hands that now felt like they belonged to a stranger.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
He didn’t answer.
The door opened anyway.
Rosalie stepped inside.
She moved slowly.
Still recovering.
But she came.
Because she was the only person in the family who understood what it felt like to have your entire reality destroyed.
“You shouldn’t be walking around.”
Theodore didn’t look at her.
“You shouldn’t have been put in a coffin.”
The words hurt.
Rosalie sat beside him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally, she said:
“I believe you.”
Theodore looked at her.
“What?”
“I believe you.”
He looked away.
“You don’t know what I am.”
Rosalie frowned.
“You’re my brother.”
“Maybe not.”
“Yes.”
Her answer was immediate.
“Theo.”
She grabbed his hand.
“You think family is blood?”
He didn’t respond.
“You think Sebastian is your brother because of genetics?”
A pause.
“No.”
“Then why are you questioning yourself?”
Because deep down, Theodore knew the answer.
He was afraid.
Not of being different.
Not of being adopted.
Not even of being lied to.
He was afraid that everyone had loved a version of him that wasn’t real.
“I spent my whole life feeling like I didn’t fit.”
Rosalie’s expression softened.
“Because you were different.”
“Maybe because I wasn’t one of you.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“You were different because you were the only one brave enough to question us.”
Theodore looked at her.
Rosalie smiled faintly.
“Do you know why Dad loved you?”
He swallowed.
“I don’t know.”
“Because you reminded him of himself.”
A tear almost escaped his eye.
Almost.
“He used to say you had the strongest heart in the family.”
Theodore looked down.
Nobody had ever told him that.
Not Sebastian.
Not anyone.
Rosalie continued:
“He was hiding something about your birth.”
She paused.
“But I know one thing.”
“What?”
“He never looked at you like you were a mistake.”
Meanwhile, Sebastian was searching through his father’s private records.
The discovery about Theodore had shaken him.
But something bothered him.
The mysterious man who appeared at the mansion.
The hidden letters.
The warning.
Everything pointed toward one conclusion.
Someone wanted them to believe Theodore was the center of the mystery.
But Sebastian knew something about manipulation.
The best lies always contained some truth.
And someone was using a real secret to hide a bigger one.
He opened another locked drawer.
Inside was a file labeled:
PROJECT ORION
Sebastian froze.
He had never seen this file before.
Impossible.
This was his father’s handwriting.
He opened it.
Inside were medical records.
DNA reports.
Financial transfers.
And one name repeated again and again.
Theodore Vale.
Sebastian’s hands tightened.
Then he saw the date.
The date was seventeen years old.
Theodore’s birth year.
The first page contained one sentence.
"If they discover the child, they will kill him."
Sebastian stopped breathing.
A child.
Not a mistake.
Not a secret.
A target.
At the same time, Evelyn stood in the empty hallway.
She knew the truth could no longer stay hidden.
She had protected Theodore for seventeen years.
But protection had become another form of deception.
She heard footsteps.
Sebastian.
“You knew.”
Evelyn turned.
He held the file.
Her face immediately changed.
“Where did you find that?”
“In Dad’s study.”
Silence.
Sebastian held up the DNA report.
“Tell me.”
Evelyn looked away.
“Sebastian…”
“Tell me.”
His voice broke.
Not from anger.
From pain.
“Is Theodore my brother?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Sebastian waited.
Then:
“But?”
The word came quietly.
Because he knew there was always a but.
Evelyn whispered:
“He is your brother.”
A pause.
“But he is also something more.”
Sebastian frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Your father believed Theodore was the key to exposing the people who destroyed our family.”
Sebastian stared.
“Why him?”
“Because of who his biological mother was.”
The hallway became silent.
Sebastian felt a chill.
“Who?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.
“The woman who knew the truth before anyone else.”
Sebastian whispered:
“Who?”
Evelyn answered:
“Adrian Mercer’s sister.”
Theodore entered the room just as the final words were spoken.
He stopped.
“What?”
Everyone turned.
Evelyn looked devastated.
Theodore stared at her.
“My mother?”
“No.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Your biological mother.”
The world seemed to stop.
Theodore looked at Sebastian.
Then Rosalie.
Then back at Evelyn.
“What are you saying?”
Evelyn approached him slowly.
“Your birth mother was someone your father trusted.”
“Who?”
Her voice trembled.
“Clara Mercer.”
The name meant nothing to Theodore.
But it meant everything to Sebastian.
Because Adrian Mercer had a sister.
A sister who disappeared seventeen years ago.
A sister everyone thought was dead.
A sister connected to the biggest secret in the Vale family.
The phone rang.
Nobody moved.
Then Sebastian answered.
The voice on the other end was familiar.
Adrian.
“You found out.”
Sebastian’s eyes narrowed.
“Where are you?”
“Closer than you think.”
“What do you want?”
A pause.
“I want Theodore.”
Everyone froze.
Sebastian stepped forward.
“You’re not touching him.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“Still protecting him?”
A pause.
“Interesting.”
Sebastian tightened his grip.
“Why him?”
Adrian’s voice became colder.
“Because he has what his father spent years hiding.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
Minutes later, the entire mansion went into lockdown.
Security searched every entrance.
Police surrounded the property.
But Theodore knew something was wrong.
Because Adrian didn’t sound like a man trying to capture him.
He sounded like a man trying to warn him.
He looked at Rosalie.
“What if everyone is wrong?”
She frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“What if Adrian isn’t trying to destroy me?”
A silence.
“What if he’s trying to stop something?”
Before Rosalie could answer…
the mansion’s security system activated.
A message appeared on every screen.
One sentence.
"THEODORE VALE IS NOT THE HEIR."
Then another line appeared.
"HE IS THE EVIDENCE."
Everyone stared.
Because the next message revealed the final secret.
"THE PERSON WHO CREATED THE VALE EMPIRE STOLE IT FROM THE MERCER FAMILY."
And beneath it…
A photograph appeared.
A photograph of Theodore’s biological mother.
Standing beside Sebastian and Rosalie’s father.
Alive.
Smiling.
Years before Theodore was born.
Theodore stared at the screen.
Because suddenly he understood.
This was never about money.
Never about inheritance.
Never about power.
It was about something older.
Something buried.
Something his father had died trying to protect.
And he was the only person left who could uncover it.
Then the final message appeared.
"COME FIND THE TRUTH, THEODORE."
May you like
"BEFORE THEY BURY YOU TOO."
