Chapter 2 – The Shot That Changed Everything

Chapter 2 – The Shot That Changed Everything

The sniper steadied his breathing.

From nearly six hundred yards away, the Blackwood estate looked peaceful beneath the Chicago night sky. Warm lights glowed through the mansion's towering windows. Luxury cars lined the circular driveway. Armed guards patrolled the grounds in practiced formation.

None of them knew death was already watching.

Through the rifle scope, the crosshairs settled on Lily as she followed Dominic down a corridor toward the council chamber.

The sniper's finger tightened against the trigger.

"Target acquired," he whispered into a concealed microphone.

A calm voice crackled through his earpiece.

"No mistakes."

"There won't be."

He exhaled.

Then squeezed.

A suppressed crack barely disturbed the night.

Inside the mansion, Lily suddenly felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.

Years of caring for Ethan had sharpened her instincts. Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

She stopped walking.

Dominic frowned.

"What is it?"

Before Lily could answer—

The reinforced glass window beside them exploded inward.

A bullet screamed through the hallway.

Dominic reacted instantly, tackling Lily to the polished floor.

The round struck a marble column behind them, showering the corridor with stone fragments.

"Sniper!" one guard shouted.

The mansion erupted into chaos.

Alarms wailed.

Steel security shutters slammed over every window.

Red emergency lights flashed through the corridors.

Dominic rolled to one knee, drawing his pistol.

"Protect Mr. Blackwood!"

Footsteps thundered from every direction.

Lily's ears rang from the blast.

Her heartbeat hammered wildly as she realized the bullet had missed her by inches.

Someone wasn't trying to scare her.

Someone wanted her dead.

Victor emerged from Ethan's room the instant the alarm sounded.

"Report."

A guard spoke into his earpiece before answering.

"Long-range shot. Target appears to have been Miss Lily."

Victor's expression hardened.

"Seal every exit."

"They already are."

"Deploy rooftop teams."

"Done."

"Drones?"

"In the air."

Victor turned to Dominic, who had just escorted Lily into the secure hallway.

"Is she hurt?"

"Only minor cuts."

Victor looked directly at Lily.

"They know about the evidence."

She nodded slowly.

"They've always known."

"What do you mean?"

Lily hesitated before speaking.

"I don't think Serena was working alone."

Outside the estate, the sniper cursed beneath his breath.

The opportunity was gone.

Within seconds, thermal drones lifted into the night sky, sweeping the surrounding streets with infrared cameras.

He disassembled the rifle with astonishing speed.

By the time the first drone reached his rooftop, nothing remained except an empty coffee cup and a discarded baseball cap.

The sniper had vanished.

In the council chamber, Victor ordered every senior member of his organization inside.

The room resembled a courtroom carved from black stone.

A long table stretched beneath an enormous crystal chandelier.

No one spoke.

Victor entered carrying Ethan, whose tiny arm rested securely in its cast.

Every hardened lieutenant lowered his eyes respectfully.

Victor sat at the head of the table.

Then looked at Lily.

"You said Serena wasn't alone."

Lily drew a slow breath.

"She received instructions."

"From whom?"

"I don't know."

"But I heard phone calls."

"What did they say?"

She closed her eyes, recalling every detail.

"They never used names."

"They talked about shipments."

"Routes."

"Wedding schedules."

"And Ethan."

The room grew colder.

One lieutenant leaned forward.

"They discussed the child?"

Lily nodded.

"As if..."

Her voice trembled.

"...he was an obstacle."

Victor's hand slowly tightened around the armrest.

At that very moment, Serena sat alone in a secured guest suite guarded by four armed men.

She paced relentlessly.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

Victor was supposed to marry her in three weeks.

After the ceremony, everything would fall into place.

The Blackwood empire would slowly collapse from within.

She had spent two years building this operation.

Two years pretending to love a man she secretly hated.

Two years earning Ethan's trust only to use him as leverage.

Now it was unraveling.

A soft vibration interrupted her thoughts.

She froze.

Her smartwatch.

She had forgotten Victor's men hadn't taken it.

The screen lit up with a single encrypted message.

ELIMINATION FAILED.

Her blood turned to ice.

Before she could erase it, the suite door swung open.

Dominic stepped inside.

His eyes immediately fell on the glowing watch.

Without a word, he removed it from her wrist.

Serena forced a smile.

"It's only a fitness tracker."

Dominic looked at the message.

His expression never changed.

"No."

He quietly slipped the watch into an evidence bag.

"It's much more than that."

Downstairs, Victor watched the forensic technician connect the smartwatch to a secure computer.

"Can you unlock it?"

The technician smiled faintly.

"If someone built it..."

"...someone can break it."

Minutes later, lines of encrypted code streamed across the monitor.

Then—

A hidden communication network appeared.

Hundreds of deleted messages.

Coordinates.

Financial transfers.

Encrypted photographs.

One folder immediately caught Victor's attention.

PROJECT HEIR.

The technician opened it.

Every person in the room stopped breathing.

The folder contained dozens of photographs of Ethan.

Some taken while he slept.

Others while he played.

Several included handwritten notes.

Allergy confirmed.

Security schedule updated.

Father absent.

Phase Three pending.

Victor felt something inside him fracture.

This had never been simple abuse.

His son had been the target of a carefully planned operation.

Lily stared silently at the photographs.

Then one image made her gasp.

"Wait."

She pointed at the screen.

"Zoom in."

The technician enlarged the background.

Standing near the nursery window was a man wearing a delivery uniform.

Victor frowned.

"I've never seen him."

Lily had.

"He wasn't a delivery driver."

She looked directly at Victor.

"He repaired the security system."

Dominic's eyes widened.

"The same week the nursery cameras failed."

Victor slowly turned toward him.

"Find his name."

Within seconds, facial recognition began searching international databases.

Thirty agonizing seconds later...

A result appeared.

No one recognized the face.

But everyone recognized the organization listed beneath it.

The Romano Syndicate.

Blackwood's oldest enemy.

Victor's gaze darkened.

"So."

He spoke almost to himself.

"It wasn't business."

"It was war."

Across the city, inside an abandoned church converted into a secret operations center, a silver-haired man watched multiple surveillance feeds displaying the Blackwood estate.

One of his men lowered his head.

"The nanny survived."

"I know."

"And Serena has been captured."

"I know."

The old man remained strangely calm.

He picked up a faded photograph of a young Victor Blackwood holding an infant Ethan.

Then smiled.

"A king protects his heir."

He placed the photograph back on the table.

"So let's make him choose."

One of the monitors suddenly displayed the live feed from a hidden camera.

Not inside the mansion.

Inside a private hospital.

A woman lay unconscious in intensive care.

The old man tapped the screen gently.

"Wake her."

His lieutenant frowned.

"Are you certain?"

The old man's smile widened.

"It's time Victor learned..."

May you like

"...his late wife never truly died."
