Chapter 9 – The Truth Behind the Mask

Chapter 9 – The Truth Behind the Mask
Darkness.
That was the first thing Victor remembered.
Then came the sound.
A slow, rhythmic heartbeat echoing through the silence.
Beep...
Beep...
Beep...
His eyelids felt impossibly heavy. Every muscle in his body refused to move.
The sweet smell of anesthetic still lingered in the air.
Then he heard a familiar voice.
Soft.
Shaking.
"Victor..."
His heart pounded.
That voice...
He knew it.
He forced his eyes open.
The world appeared in fragments before finally coming into focus.
Bright surgical lights hung overhead.
He was strapped to a hospital bed.
IV lines ran into his arm.
Heart monitors blinked steadily beside him.
Standing only a few feet away...
Was Isabella.
She looked thinner than he remembered.
Her long dark hair had been cut shorter.
Faint scars marked her wrists.
Dark circles surrounded tired eyes that had clearly cried more nights than they had slept.
Yet despite everything...
She was unmistakably the woman he had married.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Victor simply stared.
Trying to convince himself he wasn't dreaming.
Finally...
He whispered,
"You're alive."
Tears immediately filled Isabella's eyes.
"So are you."
Victor struggled against the restraints.
"They told me..."
"...you died."
She nodded slowly.
"I know."
"I watched my own funeral."
Victor stopped moving.
"What?"
"They forced me to watch."
Her voice trembled.
"They wanted me to believe you'd moved on."
"They wanted you to believe I was gone forever."
Victor closed his eyes.
Three years.
Three years mourning a woman who had never died.
Three years raising Ethan alone.
Three years believing he had failed to protect his family.
Isabella gently stepped closer.
"I never stopped trying to come home."
Across the room...
A steel door opened.
Gabriel Kane entered calmly, dressed in an expensive charcoal suit.
Two armed guards followed behind him.
He smiled politely.
"What a beautiful reunion."
Victor's eyes turned cold.
Gabriel ignored the hatred.
"I've waited years for this moment."
Victor's voice remained steady.
"You kidnapped my wife."
Gabriel nodded.
"Yes."
"You abused my son."
"No."
Victor frowned.
Gabriel continued,
"That was Serena."
"I had different plans."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"There's no difference."
Gabriel sighed.
"You still think this is about revenge."
"It isn't."
"Then what?"
Gabriel walked toward the large observation window overlooking another laboratory.
"It's about inheritance."
Victor followed his gaze.
Scientists worked around dozens of computer stations.
Medical records covered the walls.
DNA charts.
Family trees.
Blood analyses.
Victor frowned.
"What is this?"
Gabriel smiled.
"The truth."
Back at the Blackwood estate...
Lily refused to leave Ethan's side.
Rachel entered carrying an old cardboard archive box recovered from the mansion's basement.
"We found more files."
Lily looked up.
"Anything important?"
Rachel opened the box carefully.
Most documents had been damaged by moisture.
But one photo album remained intact.
The first page showed Victor and Isabella's wedding.
The second...
Ethan's birth.
Then something unusual.
A newspaper clipping.
The headline read:
LOCAL DOCTOR KILLED IN MYSTERIOUS FIRE
The accompanying photograph made Lily freeze.
The doctor looked remarkably similar to Ethan.
Almost like...
Family.
Rachel noticed.
"What is it?"
Lily slowly pointed.
"The eyes."
"The smile."
"They're identical."
Rachel read the doctor's name aloud.
Dr. Samuel Carter.
Neither woman recognized it.
But both sensed it mattered.
Inside the underground laboratory...
Gabriel unlocked a massive touchscreen display.
Dozens of family records appeared.
Victor immediately recognized one branch.
The Blackwood family.
Then another.
The Carter family.
A red line connected them.
Gabriel looked at Victor.
"You spent years believing Ethan inherited only one legacy."
Victor remained silent.
"He inherited two."
"What are you talking about?"
Gabriel enlarged one medical report.
The name at the top shocked Victor.
Dr. Samuel Carter
Gabriel spoke quietly.
"The man officially recorded as dead twenty-eight years ago."
Victor narrowed his eyes.
"I've never met him."
"Oh..."
Gabriel smiled.
"You've met him many times."
Victor stared.
Gabriel tapped another file.
A younger photograph appeared.
The resemblance became unmistakable.
Victor felt the room spin.
"No..."
Gabriel nodded.
"Samuel Carter..."
"...became Dominic Blackwood."
Victor's eyes widened.
Impossible.
Dominic?
His most trusted friend.
His head of security.
The man who had protected Ethan since birth.
Gabriel watched Victor's reaction carefully.
"He changed his identity decades ago."
Victor shook his head.
"You're lying."
"Am I?"
Gabriel handed him a thin medical folder.
Inside...
DNA results.
Official government seals.
Old adoption records.
Everything pointed to the same impossible conclusion.
Dominic had been living under another name long before joining the Blackwood organization.
At that same moment...
Dominic stood inside the estate's command center reviewing satellite feeds.
One analyst approached.
"Sir."
"What is it?"
"We've recovered additional surveillance from St. Catherine."
Dominic looked up.
"Anything useful?"
The analyst hesitated.
"You should probably see this."
Video footage began playing.
The timestamp matched the night Isabella disappeared.
Dominic watched silently.
His own face appeared on the recording.
He was arguing with someone outside the hospital.
Then the image glitched.
Static consumed the screen.
When the picture returned...
Dominic stood beside the ambulance transporting Isabella.
Rachel frowned.
"That can't be right."
Dominic looked equally confused.
"I don't remember this."
Back underground...
Victor stared at Dominic's alleged records.
Nothing made sense.
Gabriel quietly poured two glasses of water.
"You trust him."
"Yes."
"You always have."
"Yes."
Gabriel smiled sadly.
"Then ask yourself one question."
Victor remained silent.
"Who had unrestricted access to your estate..."
"...before Serena ever arrived?"
Victor didn't answer.
Gabriel continued.
"Who knew every security code?"
"Every tunnel?"
"Every hidden room?"
Victor's breathing slowed.
The questions were dangerous because they had obvious answers.
Dominic.
Gabriel leaned closer.
"I didn't create your doubts."
"I simply uncovered them."
Meanwhile...
Lily continued searching through the archive box.
Near the bottom, she found a sealed envelope marked:
FOR ETHAN — OPEN ONLY IF I'M GONE.
The handwriting belonged to Isabella.
Lily carefully opened it.
Inside rested a handwritten letter.
And a tiny silver key taped to the final page.
The letter began:
My sweet Ethan...
Lily's hands trembled.
Before she could continue reading—
The mansion's main security monitor suddenly flashed.
An alarm echoed through every room.
Rachel looked toward the screen.
A single black sedan had just stopped outside the estate's front gate.
Only one passenger stepped out.
An elderly woman carrying nothing except a white umbrella.
She looked directly into the security camera.
Then calmly spoke.
"I'm here to see my grandson."
Rachel frowned.
"Who is she?"
The facial recognition system completed its scan.
Every computer inside the command center displayed the same result.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED
ELIZABETH BLACKWOOD
STATUS: DECEASED — 11 YEARS
Lily stared at the screen in disbelief.
Another dead member of the Blackwood family...
May you like
Had just knocked on the front door.
